Tigers lock up star cub Fulton
WESTS Tigers emerging young lock Liam Fulton (pictured) had double reason to celebrate last week after yet another stout-hearted performance in the Telstra Cup premiership. Twenty year old Fulton impressed keen judges as the Tigers posted a 32-16 victory over Newcastle last Sunday at Energy Stadium Australia - only days after securing a new two year contract with the joint venture club. A skilful ball player and Junior Kangaroo, the rookie forward has cemented a regular spot in the Tigers back row with his punishing defence and high work rate this season. The re-signing of Fulton is a huge boost for the Tigers who have lost skipper Mark ONeill for 12 weeks after elbow surgery and tough prop Todd Payten (four weeks) with a leg injury. Stand-in skipper Scott Prince thrived on the extra responsibility and turned in a slick display as the Tigers snapped a four-match losing streak - posting their maiden triumph in Newcastle. But in a shock move Queensland selectors have overlooked the in-form Prince for the opening State of Origin clash against NSW at Suncorp Stadium next Wednesday - opting for livewire Cowboys half back Johnathan Thurston in the number 7 jumper. Prince gets another chance to press his representative claims when the Tigers host the high flying Canberra Raiders this Sunday at Campbelltown Stadium. City rep Brett Hodgson produced another strong game at fullback - spurring the Tigers into action with his sharp attacking raids. Slick centre Luke Hession nabbed three of the Tigers five tries with five eighth Luke Branighan contributing a personal tally of ten points from a try and three goals. Newcastle downed the Tigers 38-22 in the Jersey Flegg U/20 series. Ryde Athletes Honor Roll

Hillies Rugby Trivia Night HUNTERS Hill Rugby Club capped a big weekend when it hosted the annual Ladies Day event at Boronia Park Oval last Saturday - just hours after playing their first match under the grounds new lighting system. According to Hunters Hill Mayor Sue Hoopmann the lights were a welcome addition to the famous old ground and a big thrill for the Hillies talented U/10 juniors who chalked up a win over Mosman in the historic clash last Friday. On Saturday the Hillies lined up against Barker Old Boys with fourth grade posting a 9-5 win; thirds drew 23-all; seconds lost 18-7 and first grade 31-8. The Club will hold its annual Trivia Night this Saturday at Gladesville Sporties Club from 7.30pm. All welcome. Contact Ben Davis 0416 014 629.
