Heroes of ‘69 to spur on Tigers

WESTS Tigers players are set to take a trip down memory lane this Sunday before they square off with Melbourne Storm in a vital Telstra Cup clash at Leichhardt Oval.

Heroes of the champion 1969 Balmain premiership-winning team will be on deck to meet and cheer on Tim Sheens’ new breed of Tigers as they continue their charge towards the 2005 finals.

Leo Nosworthy’s 1969 Grand Final stars will dine at Tigers Leagues Club before arriving at the ground as VIP guests to watch the main game and later returning to the Club post match.

Only two Balmain legends are unable to attend - former Test great Arthur Beetson and the seriously ill Peter Provan.

The Tigers are smarting from a 21-4 loss to the Warriors last weekend in atrocious conditions at Ericsson Stadium where fullback Brett Hodgson shone like a beacon in the gloomy surrounds.

And it is shaping as a battle of the halves when the Tigers return to Leichhardt for the first time in 2005 with young guns Scott Prince and Benji Marshall up against the nippy Matt Orford and skilful Scott Hill.

In the corresponding match last year the Tigers posted a stirring 32-18 win.

MEANWHILE Balmain-Ryde consolidated a top eight berth with a decisive 40-12 victory over Gary Freeman’s North Sydney Bears last Saturday at Leichhardt Oval.

Fullback Joel Caine continued his superb form with a hat-trick of tries in a classy attacking display.

Other try scorers were winger Alwyn Simpson, centre Luke Hession, half Jamie Nowland, hooker Rangi Chase and back rower Tim McGann with Luke Branighan (3) and Taniela Tuiaki booting goals.

JAMIE Shepherd’s Jersey Flegg cubs recorded a scrappy 28-14 win over the Bears with forward Nigel Fruean (2), centre and skipper Franco Kmet, fullback Simon Greally and Darren Rodgers nabbing tries and Kmet landing four goals.

Team of Champions

BATTING superstar Archie Jackson and triumphant World Cup-winning skipper Belinda Clark were among the legends named in UTS-Balmain Cricket Club’s Team of Champions last Friday at the University’s Gallery Function Centre.

Tigers’ stalwarts Andrew Fitzhenry and Jason Penrose announced the men and women Legends squads - boasting 19 internationals - during the Club’s annual Presentation Night.

Pictured are Tigers’ Legends Greg Hayne, Keith Herron, Neil Maxwell, Julie Hayes, Emma Liddell, Leonie Coleman and Andrew Jones after their induction into the Club’s Hall of Fame.

The Balmain MENS Team of Champions is: Archie Jackson, Greg Hayne, Tony Steele, Bill Donaldson, Albert Cheetham, Bert Folkard (captain), Arthur Mailey, Keith Herron, John Gleeson, Andrew Jones, Dave Renneberg, Neil Maxwell (12th man).

Two of Balmain’s greatest clubmen - the late Ernie Cosgrove and Cliff Winning - were named scorer and team manager respectively.

WOMENS Team of Champions is: Belinda Clark (captain), Lisa Keightley, Martha Winch, Jan Lumsden, Julie Hayes, Leonie Coleman, Christina Matthews, Pam Meyers, Emma Liddell, Cathy Avery, Patricia Fayne, Ann Mitchell (12th lady) and team manager.

Emerging 15 year old keeper/bat Alyssa Healy and Neil Maxwell were crowned Players of the Year while Karl Whatham (835 runs @ 46.39) and international Michelle Goszko (591 runs @ 53.73) were named the Most Outstanding players in first grade.

Richard Burton (31 wickets @ 12.65) capped a fruitful season by snaring the first grade bowling award. TWT on-the-spot PHOTO.

Hills conquer Mountains

HUNTERS Hill first grade rugby team recorded a hard-fought 34-25 win over Blue Mountains last Saturday in the NSW Suburban competition at Boronia Park Oval.

The Hillies scored two quick tries to set a 20-15 lead at the break before the Mountains hit back. No 8 Brad McCarthy, centre Chris Brunsdon and half back Scott Lancaster guided the Hillies to victory with strong games.
