Big day out for Bill & Thelma
POPULAR Ryde identities Bill and Thelma Brown celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary last weekend with a family dinner party. They are pictured after their wedding at St Patricks Church Kogarah on May 27, 1955 which was followed by a reception at the Ace of Clubs in Sylvania. The couple moved to Putney in 1958 where they resided until purchasing their current home in Ryde in 2000. Bill, who served in the Navy, grew up in Perth and helped Western Australia win a National Surf Life Saving Championship. He was Chief Petty Officer on the HMAS Shoalhaven (in Korea), HMAS Melbourne & Sydney and later gave yeoman service to the Balmain Junior League and Putney-Tennyson Bowling Club. Bill is a life member of BJL where he served as secretary and both the Putney-Tennyson Bowling and Community Clubs, helping establish the organisation as one of the finest in the City of Ryde. A great bowls stalwart, Bill is an ex-Chairman of the Board and Bowls Club president and continues to play an active role. Thelma has given outstanding service to the Red Cross Voluntary Aid Department; Holy Cross College Ryde; Gladesville Leisure for Learning and Ryde Womens Probus Club. They have three children Andrew, Chris and Kathleen and four grandkids Ellie, Jessica, Nick and Bronte. |
