Tigers lure Lolesi & gun Galloway

WESTS Tigers are the club on everyone’s lips after snaring two major recruits and completing a victory double over rivals Sydney Roosters in the 2005 Telstra Cup premiership.

The enterprising Tigers zoomed into finals calculations with a deserved 26-16 triumph over the Roosters last Sunday at Telstra Stadium - only days after announcing the prize signatures of boom Cronulla forward Keith Galloway and Bulldogs’ Kiwi international centre Jamaal Lolesi.

It was the Tigers’ third win on the trot and leaves the joint venture club in strong contention for the top eight on 22 points after this weekend’s bye.

Lolesi, best known for his pace and agility, has signed a two year contract while 19 year old Galloway, a strong running forward with a great off load, has joined the Tigers for the next three seasons.

“I’m confident Jamaal will enhance our current line up and his experience with the Bulldogs and New Zealand will certainly be an advantage” said Tigers head coach Tim Sheens.

“He’s well known for his tenacious on field attitude and we are hoping to utilise this in our attacking plays for the coming seasons.”

Lolesi,24, expects a smooth transition into the side where he’ll be reunited with New Zealand Test team mates Benji Marshall, Dene Halatau, Paul Whatuira and Bronson Harrison.

Galloway, who weighs in at 112kg and stands at over 190cm, is a powerful addition and hopes to develop under the leadership of Sheens.

“Training under Tim was certainly an appealing part of the package. He is well regarded within the rugby league community and I hope to learn a lot from him” said Galloway.

An excited Sheens said forward recruits Ryan O’Hara and Galloway would add much needed size to the Tigers’ forward pack.

The Tigers are confident that bringing in players of the calibre of Lolesi, coupled with the current mix of youth and talent, will make for a highly competitive mix.

MEANWHILE Balmain-Ryde Eastwood were pipped 34-32 by Newcastle in Premier League last Sunday.

Dan a chip off old Block

DANIEL Roach - son of Tigers rugby league legend Steve ‘Blocker’ Roach - is set to follow in his famous dad’s footsteps next month when he dons the green and gold of Australia.

But it won’t be in his father’s chosen sport - 18 year old Dan of East Ryde will represent the Australian Schoolboys rugby team in a ‘Test’ match against Japan on August 18 at Scots College followed by matches with Samoa and New Zealand.

Roach junior, a student at St Ignatius Riverview, earned his international spurs after powerful displays in the GPS competition and for NSW at the National Schoolboy Rugby Championships last week in Canberra.

Just like ‘Blocker’, Dan is a ball playing prop with the size and skills to go a long way and turned in a strong performance to help NSW roll Queensland 20-10 in the final and win the title.

He’ll be joined in the Australian squad by St Josephs Hunters Hill stars - five eighth Kurtley Beale, second rower Matt Day, No 8 Patrick McCutcheon and half back Nathan Sievert; Eastwood Colts back Rowan Kellam; fullback Lachlan Turner of Epping and lock Phil Mathers, son of former Eastwood Wallaby forward Mick Mathers.

Daniel, who also represented NSW in water polo at the age of 16, plays rugby league with the undefeated Holy Cross Rhinos U/18s in the Balmain Junior League.

But he’ll now focus on his rugby as he attempts to cement a spot for the Australians end of year schoolboy tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Roos U/15 AFL Challenge

NORTHSIDE U/15 North Ryde Power Roos will line up against the Macleod Eagles in the ‘Melbourne Challenge’ this Saturday at DeWinton Park Oval in Melbourne.

The Power Roos team evolved as a result of an amalgamation of North Ryde and neighbouring club Drummoyne and although the team didn’t put any wins on the board last season are developing well this year under coaches Darren Lewtas and Brett Mallinson.

After a challenging season, the team looks forward to their weekend in Melbourne where not only will they play their Yarra Valley counterparts but also attend a Kangaroos training session at the famous Arden Street Oval, tour the MCG and AFL Hall of Fame Sensation and attend the Sydney Swans v Melbourne match at Telstra Dome.
