Graffiti as ‘art’ project rejected

Ryde City Council is to work on fresh strategies to combat growing graffiti problems after suggestions to help initiate community art projects to curb graffiti were rejected by the Public Facilities and Services Committee last week.

Clr Terry Perram said that proactive community members would be encouraged, but Council would not be interested in initiating such a project.

Clr Maha Melhem had tried to reinstate the community art objectives outlined in the original report, but Council defeated the request.

Expressions of interest in opening and running a café or kiosk in Blenheim Park, North Ryde, are now open to interested parties.

Although the committee doubted whether there would be a demand for such a service, a potential business owner and members of the community have shown interest.

The lease would be for a maximum of five years, but an extension could be obtained through Ministerial approval. The committee also suggested the possibility of mobile van businesses using the space although cost could be prohibitive.

West Ryde’s overflow car park has come under fire following concerns by residents that it hasn’t been cleaned appropriately. The overflow car park in 15, 17 and 19 Chatham Road, which are vacant lots, is yet to be cleaned by Council. The committee also raised issues over closing times and wet weather concerns.
