Top award for rescuing abandoned animals Gladesville resident Sally Rogers (pictured right) has received a top award for finding homes for abandoned and neglected animals. Sally was honoured for her tireless dedication with the annual Compassion Award from the World League for Protection of Animals (WLPA). Sally has spent a lot of time, effort and money rescuing and finding homes for the hundreds of thousands of animals abandoned every year. There is always going to be a phone call that will stretch the capacity of our carers in the area, but we try to keep a light on to help as many as we can, Sally said. WLPA President, Joan Papayanni said, The compassion awards go to individuals who have truly acted above and beyond the role of a traditional volunteer. It is to such unsung heroes as Sally that we make the annual compassion award. Sadly, as long as there are people unaware of the need to desex their animals, the problem will continue. WLPA office manager Kelly Lachman said, Our saddest days are when we take calls for assistance from pounds which have just had as many as 20 kittens a day surrendered and we dont have the space or the carers to take them. Carers like Sally only have a finite capacity and its just not possible to save them all. If you have access to a community or work notice board, go to www.catrescue.com.au and print out their homes wanted flyers, updated weekly. If you are looking for a rescued companion animal then just call WLPA, a hands-on organisation which receives no government subsidies, on 9817 4892 or visit www.catrescue.com.au
