Around the Wickets - Tigers welcome back Krejza and Thorpe
UTS-BALMAIN Cricket Club selectors will rush back NSW spinning all rounder Jason Krejza (pictured) and former England Test batsman Graham Thorpe for fixtures against Campbelltown-Camden and premiers Sydney University this weekend in the Sydney first grade competition. Krejza - sidelined for 16 weeks with shin stress fractures - returns to bat at number three for the Tigers in a two-day clash against Campbelltown starting this Saturday at Drummoyne Oval and in a limited overs fixture the following day at Sydney University Oval. It is a huge boost for the under-achieving Tigers who have sorely missed the services of the versatile 23 year old off spinner who was a member of the triumphant NSW Pura Cup-winning squad last summer. Krejza was hampered by injury during off-season stints in Scotland with the Hillend-Greenock club, for English county club Leicestershire and later on the NSW pre-season tour of India. He complained of leg soreness while playing in club and representative matches earlier this season before undergoing a four month rehabilitation program. Thorpe, who made his debut for the Tigers in a one-day clash against Penrith on January 7, missed recent matches against Manly and Parramatta due to a back injury. The Tigers are licking their wounds after a disappointing first innings loss to Manly-Warringah last weekend at Drummoyne Oval. Resuming at 5-136 and having eclipsed Balmains first day total of 116, the Seasiders declared at 9-248 after Tim Cruikshank (76 not out), Craig Little (76) and Michael Cosentino (51) registered half centuries. Lion-hearted pacemen Craig OShannessy (3-65 off 18 overs) and skipper Richard Burton (1-19 off 13) were the pick of the Balmain bowlers. In their second innings the Tigers finished at 3-115 after gritty knocks from Tim Sparke (49) and Richard Colbran (35 not out). MEANWHILE Balmain Poidevin-Gray team produced its best performance of the U/21 series to thump Gordon last Sunday at Killara Oval. Rising first grade star Tim Sparke cracked a brilliant 122 with support from Vilen Sithloo (68) and English all rounder David Hammond who hit 43 not out before snaring a match-winning haul of 4-9 with the ball. SECONDS: Manly 259 d UTS-Balmain 196 (Neil Maxwell 75, Simon Skinner 23); THIRDS: Manly 112 (Chris Campbell 4-42, Patrick Little 3-21, Andrew Hoppett 3-21) d UTS-Balmain 97 & 8-161 (Gordon Pritchard 36, C Campbell 35, Jason Penrose 22); FOURTHS: UTS-Balmain 141 & 4-88 (Marcus Tripp 27no, Andrew Blanchard 20) d Manly 139 (Richard Sheargold 5-58); FIFTHS: UTS-Balmain 87 & 0-48 (Nick Ball 28no) d Manly 26 & 108 outright; POIDEVIN-GRAY SHIELD: UTS-Balmain 4-326 (Tim Sparke 122 Vilen Sithloo 68, David Hammond 43no) d Gordon 192 (D Hammond 4-9, Daniel Jacob 2-26). Tigers Oz Day honors
CRAFTY Wests Tigers hooker Robbie Farah has received an Australia Day award from the United Australian Lebanese Movement in recognition of his outstanding sporting achievements and support of both the Lebanese and Australian communities. The premiership-winning rake is pictured accepting his award from UALM co-ordinator Elie Frangi with team-mates Jamaal Lolesi, Scott Prince, Bronson Harrison and Benji Marshall at the Tigers home base at Concord. Junior golfers bask between the flags
North Ryde Golf Club president Michael Flaherty with Junior Open winner Eric Chun at the presentation. ERIC CHUN can walk to school but he drives a long way every day. At 15 years of age, Chun is the States top junior golfer - an achievement which stems from a regimented daily schedule of practice on the fairways and greens. Last week the Cronulla schoolboy who plays off a club handicap of plus one, shot 67 and edged out top northern district junior Danny An in the North Ryde Golf Club Junior Open event by two shots. In was second time unlucky for An who was also narrowly beaten by the boy from the beach in last years North Ryde Junior Open. Rain softened fairways and testing rough did little to handicap the top juniors in the Jack Newton sanctioned age qualifying event. An, who tees off for the Ryde- Parramatta club and at 14-years-of-age plays off scratch, went down by two strokes to Chun who is also the NSW Junior Vardon Champion. This year 93 junior golfers registered for the North Ryde Open - competing in age groupings from nine to 17. Thirteen year old Young Park from Liverpool (17 handicap) scored with the best open boys net score of 64. In the North Ryde Junior Girls open section, 12-year-old Monica Jung (9 handicap) from Strathfield Golf Club showed an older field the way of the course to shoot 80 off the stick to win from 17-year-old Joan Lee from Ryde-Parramatta by one shot. North Rydes Lisa Graham (14 handicap) carded the best open girls net score of 68 with Ryde-Parramatta club taking the overall teams event from North Ryde. North Ryde vice captain and Junior Development chairperson Dennis Mather said the club was concentrating on strengthening its junior golfing base. The club now has 31 junior boys, five junior girls, 44 cadet boys and 12 cadet girls, Mather said. Our junior development program is strongly supported by the Clubs Professional Golf Team, volunteers and local sponsors and with the level of coaching commitment the club offers, young golfers are shooting remarkable scores on the tight North Ryde layout.

Hot shot Miller turns on the style A WHIRLWIND century by X-Cell opener Chris Funky Miller propelled his side to a comfortable seven wicket victory over Gladesville RSL Gold last Saturday in a Gladesville Cricket Association A Grade one day clash at Gannan Park. Stroke playing Miller produced a fine exhibition of power hitting - smashing an unbeaten 100 off only 28 scoring shots to record one of the fastest-scoring tons posted this summer. It was a case of Miller magic as he clouted nine sixes and seven boundaries to butcher the RSL Gold bowling, hitting an incredible 30 runs off one over and 18 runs off another. He also chipped in with 2-13 as the Gold X1 were bundled out for 115. Meanwhile leg-spinner Oliver Boudib grabbed 5-27 to engineer Gladesville RSL Whites victory over Forest Lodge in B Grade at Boronia Park Oval No 2 with Tim Nichols scoring 68 with five sixes and three boundaries. Hayden Ready claimed 6-19 in a stunning eight over spell to set up Bayview Taverns win over Lane Cove Dream Team in B Grade Anthony Bocca (70), Steve Auburn (62 not out), John Wright (53 not out) and Steve Spackman (4-14) also turned in meritorious efforts with bat and ball. Wilkinson leads way HUNTERS Hill Cricket team continued its winning ways in the Suburban Cricket competition when they overpowered the Beavers at Boronia Park Oval last weekend. In extreme temperatures Hillies were up to the task - losing their top three batsmen cheapily before the middle order stood firm with Dave Jav Wilkinson knocking up 52 before he was run out late in the innings. Stewart Kimber contributed a hard fought 23 not out but was probably more interested in the way the top order fell and the fact that sundries finished second top score with 31. Kimber and Paul Croll opened the Hillies attack with Croll snaring 3-40 off ten overs but Stews effort with the bat had left him temporarily low on fuel so Pete Bennett replaced him after three overs and grabbed 3-20 in an eight over spell. Kimber put his hand up for another shot and promptly took the last three wickets to claim 3-13 off five as the Hillies decimated the Beavers for 75.
