Kids to learn how dogs behave

A new campaign aimed at reducing dog attacks on children has the support of Ryde MP John Watkins.

Mr Watkins believes the education program will help children learn about dog behaviour. “Children need to learn how to approach dogs,” he said, “and interact with them in a safe way.”

Minister for Local Government Kerry Hickey recently announced that an education campaign would be rolled out to all NSW schools in 2007.

John Watkins said that there were some basic rules when dealing with dogs and parents should also play a major role in supervising and teaching children about dog behaviour.

Late last year, the State Government introduced tough new penalties to crack down on acquiring, selling or breeding dogs which included the Pit Bull Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino and Fila Brasiliero.

Basic rules for interaction with dogs include:
* Always supervise young children near dogs.
* If buying a dog, choose a breed suitable to your lifestyle and environment.
* Ensure your dog has the opportunity to socialise safely with children.
* Ask permission from the owner to approach their dog.
* Avoid approaching dogs that are sleeping or eating.
* Stand still if approached by a strange dog - do not jump or yell.
