Dynamo Davison in vintage touch

WORLD Cup hotshot John Davison turned on the power hitting at Drummoyne Oval last Saturday to spur Mosman to a limited overs victory over UTS-Balmain in the opening round of the 2006-07 Sydney first grade cricket competition.

Davison - who posted the fastest World Cup century in history at the 2003 tournament in South Africa - was in the groove as he clouted a whirlwind 71 off 40 balls to help Mosman register 6-315 from their 50 overs.

The 36 year old off spinner later grabbed 2-57 as the visitors dismissed the Tigers for 270 to start their campaign on a winning note.

It was a vintage performance from Davison - the Canadian-born all rounder who grew up in the Sydney suburb of Lindfield and starred for the Gordon club before leaving his mark in first-class cricket with both Victoria and South Australia.

Former Northern District all rounder Cameron Eve (91 not out) and Sean Pope (77) added 128 for the sixth wicket as the Mosman middle order hammered the Tigers attack to all parts of the ground.

Earlier Davison and opener Elliott Bullock (26) shared a third wicket union of 88 runs after the visitors lost two early wickets in the balmy conditions.

The flamboyant Davison etched his name into folklore with brilliant displays for Canada at the 2003 World Cup where he finished the leading run scorer and wicket taker for his country.

He recorded the fastest World Cup century in history when he scored 111 off 76 balls against the West Indies - the first 100 off only 67 balls - in a memorable knock that featured 6 sixes and eight boundaries.

It was also the fifth fastest century in one day international history and he followed this up with the third-fastest World Cup fifty against New Zealand.

Davison, who cracked two sixes and 11 boundaries, combined with Eve and Pope to savage the Balmain bowling in a three hour blitz.

It was a lacklustre performance by the Tigers with the ball and in the field - but they responded with a spirited run chase.

Young gun Tim Sparke hit a superb 85 off 86 balls that included three sixes and five boundaries while recruits Jeremy Bray (53), Mark Atkinson (40) and Karl Whatham (24) made significant contributions.

Bray and Whatham gave the Tigers a flying start with an opening stand of 56 while Matt Schenke snared 3-58 in his first game back for the club.

SECONDS: UTS-Balmain 3-158 (Manjot Singh 80no, Jarrod Gordon 29) d Mosman 155 (Neil Maxwell 3-22, M Singh 2-28).

Skilful Paul takes hat-trick in his stride

A STYLISH first-up century by Bayview Tavern batsman Anthony Bocca and a hat-trick by Palace Hotel seamer Paul Stride proved the highlights of opening round action in the Gladesville Cricket Association competition last Saturday.

Bocca, a talented opening bat, scored 133 in Bayview’s resounding B Grade win over Lane Cove at North Ryde Oval and smashed 18 boundaries during his marathon knock.

Team mate and pace bowler Hayden Ready destroyed the Lane Cove batting line up - claiming 6-45 in a fiery 18 over spell.

Stride opened the season in sensational fashion when he grabbed a hat-trick against Five Dock RSL to finish with figures of 5-19.

15 year old leg-spinner Matthew Trodden traded his Wests Tigers ball boy outfit for cricket attire and collected 3-23 for premiers Wanderers in their A Grade win over Forest Lodge.

Shamrocks clinch Pepsi Cup

DUNDAS Shamrocks Mini League footballers are the toast of Balmain Junior League after winning the Pepsi Cup division at this year’s NSWRL Tommy Bishop Shield Gala competition for U/7 juniors at Toyota Park.

The Shamrocks were one of four Balmain teams to compete with success at the tournament along with Concord-Burwood, Leichhardt Wanderers and Five Dock RSL.

After training for the past month the team quickly built cohesion in preparation for a series of tough pool matches against some of the best teams in the State.

Dundas suffered early narrow losses before hitting their straps and notching some impressive victories to move through to the Pepsi Cup division where they tipped out Kingsgrove Colts 32-8 in a semi final.

The team was coached by Michael Blanchard and managed by Peter Langford. Trainer was Dion Paterson.

Reds earn rugby trophy

Matt’s five wickets off five balls!

SCHOOLBOY cricketer Matt Furness achieved a rare sporting feat at Meadowbank last week that he will treasure forever.

Taking the ball for Denistone East senior team in a Ryde Public Schools Sports Association cricket match against Boronia Park, the promising 12 year old quick snared five wickets off five balls to engineer a decisive victory.

It was a magnificent performance by Furness, a Gladesville U/13 junior representative, who finished with the incredible figures of 5-1 off his first and only over!

Batting first, Denistone East posted 113 runs off their 16 overs. When Karl Stuart opened the bowling for Denistone East and picked up a wicket with each of his first two balls, Furness provided safe hands to take catches in the covers on each occasion.

Next two Denistone East bowlers Geoff Wilson and Matthew Maittlen followed suit by picking up wickets with their opening deliveries to leave Boronia Park struggling at 5-24.

Enter young Furness who dismissed five Boronia batsmen with his last five deliveries - all clean bowled - and each of the last three taking out middle stump. Thus the Boronia Park innings was completed in just six overs for a total of 25 with Matt having a hand in seven of the 10 dismissals.

Community spirit alive

REGISTERED Clubs continued to support the community last week when Gladesville RSL Community Club gave away its annual grants to registered charities in the local area.

Nearly $25,000 was donated to local charities under category one of the Community Development and Support Expenditure Scheme. Under category two of the scheme the Club donated another $42,000 to local community sporting and support groups during 2006.

Club President Chris Coady said he was extremely pleased to be able to continue the Club’s relationship with these community groups that do so much to help others.

Among the nine charities that benefited from the donations were: Gladesville Community Aid, Hunters Hill Respite Care Centre, Mars Inc, Gladesville Occasional Childcare Centre, Ryde Family Support, Ryde-Hunters Hill Community Transport, Delta Society Australia, Gladesville-Hunters Hill & Ryde Combined Pensioners Association and Ryde’s own Cochlear Implant Centre.

For many of these organisations this wasn’t the first time they had received assistance from the Club.

The Cochlear Implant Centre has now received funding for the past four years, indicating that Clubs were developing partnerships that were of great value to the people in the local area.

Carlile sponsorship a boon for Ryde swimmers

CARLILE Swimming Organisation has this year signed a sponsorship deal with the 43-year-old Ryde Swim-ming Club.

The sponsorship involves the funding of a family support program and the club’s traditional Friday Night Racing Program for a minimum of $10,000 per year.

In recognition of this generous support the club has changed its name to Ryde-Carlile Swimming Club.

The name Carlile has a long history with Ryde Swimming Club where former Australian coach Ursula Carlile is presently Head Coach.

Fifteen swimmers from the club competed at the recent NSW State Age Short Course Championships held at Sydney Olympic Centre.

Many swimmers achieved personal best times with talented Cameron Piper (two gold, one bronze), Thomas Donaldson and Eloise Laws the best performers for the Club.

Other swimmers who achieved top ten results were Darren Chien, Max Chien, Ryan Fox and Jacob Molloy.

Piper recently competed with the NSW Age Development Team that entered the Queensland Short Course Championships. Again Cameron excelled by gaining three gold medals and a bronze.

Ryde-Carlile swimmers in the Bronze, Silver and Gold training squads are presently benefiting from the vast experience of Professor Brent Rushall, a sports scientist and University lecturer who has advised and worked with Canadian Olympic swimmers and has been a prolific sports writer.

The 2006/2007 Swimming season commences in the next few weeks and the Ryde-Carlile Club will hold a Registration Night this Friday September 29 at Ryde Aquatic Centre from 5pm.

Club swimming races commence on Friday October 6 at the Pool from 6pm to 6.30pm.
