Seven of the best for Colbran

A STYLISH ton by boom colt Tim Sparke and unbeaten half century from skipper Mark Atkinson inspired UTS-Balmain cricket team in their first grade clash with North Sydney in the Sydney grade competition last weekend at North Sydney Oval.

But their sterling efforts with the bat were all in vain as the Tigers (8-253) finished 20 runs shy of their northern rivals (6-273) in a drawn fixture.

With no play possible the previous Saturday due to the condition of the pitch, both teams had 120 overs to force a result.

Sent in to bat, the Norths side racked up 273 runs for the loss of six wickets off 60 overs with number five Scott Rodgie top scoring with 90 and Rob Aitken compiling an unbeaten 54.

Rodgie shared a fourth wicket stand of 100 with Peter Sachs (33) and combined with Aitken for a fifth wicket partnership of 49 after Norths had lost three wickets with 54 runs on the board.

Rookie Tigers’ paceman Jay Poria tuned up for this week’s Australian U/19 Championships in Ade-laide with a confidence-boosting haul of 4-56 off 12 overs.

Poria, 18, and Balmain team mate Manjot Singh will represent NSW at this year’s national titles after impressive performances on the grade scene and in selection trials.

Young quick Craig O’ Shannessy chimed in with 2-61 in a fiery 18 over spell.

The Tigers were cruising at 2-188 when centurion Sparke was caught by Rodgie off the bowling of G Sullivan - a wicket that hurt the visitors.

Sparke was in brilliant touch, posting a ton off 127 balls and hammering 14 boundaries and a six to put the Tigers in a strong position.

He was supported by the pugnacious Atkinson who carved out an unbeaten 62.

UTS-BALMAIN second grade team chalked up an outright win over Norths at Drummoyne Oval - with all rounder Richard Colbran earning Player of the Match honors.

Colbran snared the excellent figures of 7-32 in a stunning 18 over spell as Norths collapsed to be all out for 127 in their second innings.

Joe Denly (29) and Colbran (16 not out) led the way with the bat as the Tigers scored the 79 runs required for maximum points for the loss of seven wickets.

BALMAIN (794) have established a 100 point lead in the Club Championship race from second placed Randwick-Petersham (694).

The Tigers currently lead the second and fourth grade competitions and sit in second spot on 44 points in third grade behind leaders Gordon (46).

Big Ben captures elusive NSW title

AT the ripe age of 32, Gladesville athlete Ben Phillips (pictured) can be described in sporting terms as a “late bloomer.”

The Kings School physical education teacher recently celebrated his finest sporting achievement to date when he won the NSW Amateur Boxing Association Super Heavyweight title at Coogee-Randwick RSL.

It was a proud moment for Phillips who defeated his second opponent with a first round TKO to claim the gold medal.

With former Tongan professional boxer Alani Moala in his corner, Ben realised the potential he has shown since first donning the boxing gloves as a 13 year old schoolboy.

A spartan training regime under the teak-tough Moala at Parramatta Police Citizens Youth Club has reaped a dividend for Phillips in the shape of a State boxing title.

“I began boxing at the age of 13 because my father felt that becasue I was big for my age it was important that I learn how to handle myself. I remember him saying ‘older blokes are going to want to test you’ so he took me to the Tom Lamming’s Golden Gloves Gym in Glebe and I’ve been hooked ever since” said Phillips.

“To finally win the NSW title after so long is satisfying indeed and a lot of the credit must go to the trainers that have influenced my career - people like Alani, Danny McDougall, Roy Bijkerk, Johnny Lewis, Steve Deller, Anthony Sobb and Tom Lamming jnr.”

As a 16 year old, 91kg heavyweight Phillips made his ring debut and reached the final of the NSW Junior titles losing a split decision. “All I had to do was jab him and my trainer Danny McDougall was into me to follow the fight plan. I tried to bang him over but my 100kg opponent ended up outscoring me. Looking back that loss was the best thing that could have happened because it fuelled the desire to win the NSW title for 16 years. Phillips’ recent gold medal triumph improved his record to 12 wins from 18 career fights which also includes the Australian Universities Heavyweight title in 1994.

Football has also figured prominently in Phillips’ sporting life with the forward warrior overcoming a serious leg injury to make his first grade debut with Eastwood Rugby Club at the age of 29.

During his schoolboy days Phillips teamed up with future Kangaroo back rower Ben Kennedy in a crack St Josephs College Hunters Hill 1st XV that conquered all to win the 1992 GPS Championship.

It was during that era that Phillips made a name for himself as a fearless rugby league forward with the Balmain Harold Matthews, S.G Ball, Jersey Flegg and Presidents Cup teams as well winning a Metropo-litan Cup title with Ryde Eastwood Hawks. Winning the Student Rugby World Cup as part of the un-defeated Australian Ter-tiary team in 1996 was another highlight.

“I had some great coaches during my football days including Brother Anthony Boyd, Ken Stapleton, Steve Roach and Eastwood mentor Chris Hickey” said Phillips.

Ben’s motto these days is: “You’re a long time retired and you don’t want to die wondering.”

“I’ll just keep training hard and see how the body holds up” he said.

Girls Night Out

UMPIRE’S committee of Eastwood Ryde Netball Assocation recently held a successful ‘Girls Night In’ evening at Meadowbank Park to raise finds for the Cancer Council.

ERNA officials would like to thank everyone who came along and entered into the fun of the night and gave so generously to the cause.

It is well known that each and everyone of us knows of someone who has been affected by Cancer.

PUBLICITY officer Neita Matthews said the Umpires committee were overwhelmed with the response from so many of the ERNA clubs including the generous donations from members and friends who attended the event.

Umpires co-ordinator Terri Sivertsen expressed sincere thanks to Carol Rezo who spoke so inspiringly and honestly about her breast cancer journey.

There were many damp eyes amongst the large group and hearts were filled with admiration for her courage in not only living through her experiences but talking about it.

Those people present remembered ERNA’s Carolyn McLead who succumbed to cancer earlier this year. Carolyn was a hard working member of the ERNA Umpires committee for many years.

“We felt honoured to have Carolyn’s sister Jenny and daughter Nikki with us on this special occasion” said Terri.

Many people went away with a greater awareness and understanding of this illness which affects so many people.

The night was considered a huge success with over 100 people attending the function and spokes-person Stephanie Lower said the committee had raised over $4,500 on the night.
