Global Warming Loonies Rave on with Bulldust!

PART 2

with John F Booth AM Editor, The Weekly Times

Can you believe the number of raving loonies we’ve brought out of the woodwork with their crazy fanciful notions of the end is nigh because of global warming and climate change!

I really didn’t realise we had such a percentage of off-the-planet readers among our normally mature and highly intelligent readership.

Looks like we’ll have to reintroduce a comics section and Horoscope page to meet their insatiable appetite for the weird and wonderful.

Seems I really hit a raw nerve with some of our faithful if misguided readership last week when I posed the question of how many of our readers have accepted the scaremonger propaganda of the professional Armageddon pedlars of global warming.

Well, I must confess I’m quite surprised by the number and the intensity of some of our readers and the very candid words you’ve used to express your dissatisfaction and disagreement with my views.

But on the other hand I am delighted that you have responded and very much welcome your point of view and hope that as we openly and sensibly discuss and debate the issue just maybe one of us will see the light and change our opinions. Whether that be you or me only time will tell.

Your Opinion Welcome

However, we intend to keep the opinion pages open for a full and healthy debate without any form of censorship so that all sides of the argument can be fully aired.

Neil Fisher of Granville thanked the Daily Telegraph on Monday (February 19, Letters) “for finally publishing an article on global warming that reveals the true state of our knowledge on the matter, and is from a reputable Australian climate researcher “Climate doomsayers are just full of hot air” Daily Telegraph February 16.

And on Sunday we had Cardinal George Pell compelled to put pen to paper in the Sunday Telegraph saying “global warming doomsayers were out and about in a big way recently, but the rain came in central Queensland, then here in Sydney. January also was unusually cool.

“We have been subjected to a lot of nonsense about climate disasters as some zealots have been presenting extreme scenarios to frighten us”.

Cardinal Pell said that we know enormous climate changes have occurred in world history – for example the ice ages and Noah’s flood when human causation could only have been negligible.

“Nor should it be too surprising to learn that during the past 100 years the media has alternated between promoting fear of a new ice age and fear of global warming.

“Terrible droughts are not infrequent in Australian history sometimes lasting seven or eight years”, Cardinal Pell said and “scaremongers have used temperature fluctuations over limited periods and in a few places to misrepresent longer patterns”.

He said the concentration of carbon dioxide increased surface temperatures more in winter than in summer especially in mid and high latitudes over land while there was a global cooling of the stratosphere.

No warming in 25 years!

Britain’s University of East Anglia climate research unit found global temperatures did not rise between 1998 and 2005 and a NASA satellite recently found the southern hemisphere has not warmed in the past 25 years.

Cardinal Pell asks the question: Is mild global warming a northern phenomenon?

He adds: “We may have been alarmed by the sighting of an iceberg as large as an aircraft carrier off Dunedin but we should be consoled by the news that the Antarctic is getting colder and the ice is growing there.

“The science is certainly more complicated than the propaganda”.

To that I simply say Amen.
