Tigers Matt to star at Origin

Tiger cub Matt has huge heart

A FORMER paperboy from Gladesville has grabbed the headlines with selection in the NSW U/17 rugby league team to play Queenland in a curtain-raiser to the second State of Origin match next Wednesday at Telstra Stadium.

Holy Cross workhorse Matt Hyland is the latest Balmain product to earn a State cap after solid performances this season in the junior representative arena.

The hard-working lock forward impressed selectors with a strong game in a Possibles v Probables trial last week at Leichhardt Oval to clinch a spot in the Junior Blues run-on side.

Hyland was blooded in the Tigers’ S.G Ball U/18 squad for this year’s NSWRL Junior Cup series and left his mark with courageous displays against more experienced opponents.

His high work rate and copybook defence were a big plus for Darren McLean’s Tiger cubs in a tough campaign and an inspiration to his older team-mates.

Matt played his early junior football with the Holy Cross Rhinos before switching to Carlingford and helping the Cougars capture three successive Balmain-St George junior premierships from U/14s to U/16s.

Last year Hyland showed his leadership qualities when he skippered the Balmain Harold Matthews Cup squad and earned rave reviews for his tireless performances.

The tackling machine is back with the Rhinos for the 2007 season as a key member of the crack Holy Cross U/17s team that currently leads the competition.

Matt - the son of former Ryde Devils enforcer and Balmain trainer Steve Hyland - will also line up for the Wests Tigers CUBS squad on their end-of-season tour of the Northern Territory in October.

He may be light weight in size but young Hyland has a heart as big as Phar Lap and will do his district proud when he tackles the Junior Maroons in the biggest match of his career to date in front of a boisterous 80,000 crowd.

KEITH GALLOWAY - strong comeback for Tigers.

Eelectric Eels triumph

PARRAMATTA snapped the Wests Tigers’ six match winning streak on Monday night with a thumping 38-8 victory in the NRL premiership at Telstra Stadium.

The Eels produced a dominant seven-try performance with sparkling attack and brutal defence to blow the in-form Tigers off the park.

It was the Eels’ sixth successive win over the Tigers, who travel to EnergyAustralia Stadium this Sunday for a tilt with Newcastle.

BALMAIN-Ryde Eastwood staved off a strong finishing Canberra to register a hard-fought 22-16 victory in Premier League last Saturday at Leichhardt Oval.

The Tigers had to fight tooth and nail to shut out the Raiders and pick up two valuable competition points after an absorbing tussle.

Gun centre Rhys Hanbury capped a powerful display for the Tigers by nabbing two tries and creating havoc with his bustling runs out wide.

Strapping forward Keith Galloway was another player to impress in his comeback match from injury along with hooker Lewis Brown and utility players Stuart Flanagan and Dave Marando.

The Tigers jumped to a handy 20-6 lead following a try double to Hanbury and tries by rookie lock Blake Ayshford and forward Sam Moa.

But the Raiders showed plenty of grit and piled on two quick tries to storm back into reckoning.

SOUTH SYDNEY Jersey Flegg team upset Balmain 36-16 in an U/20 Cup fixture at Leichhardt.

The Rabbitohs led 20-16 when Tigers centre Kingi Akauola was sent from the field with 12 minutes left on the clock - then rammed home their advantage with three late tries.

Balmain were best served by playmaker Marc Russell, prop Herman Retzlaff and five eighth Blake Lazarus.

Dane,12, is Holy Cross Cricketer of the Year

GIFTED all round sportsman Dane Clifford is the Holy Cross Junior Cricketer of the Year for 2006-07.

The talented 12 year old all rounder took out the coveted President’s Award for his superb performances in the Northern District Junior Cricket Association U/12 competition at the Holy Cross Presentation Night last Saturday at Ryde Ex Services Club.

Young Dane excelled in all facets of the game - scoring 304 runs @38.0 which included a maiden century (101 not out); sharing a record second wicket stand of 179 with Andrew Bligh and bagging 16 wickets @ 9.62.

He also picked up the Brian Brereton Trophy for the U/12 Player of the Year.

Dane is pictured front centre with U/9 Player of the Year (Principal’s Trophy) James Loneragan; U/10 Player of Year (Br John Thompson Trophy) Connor Sheehan; U/11 Player of Year (Br Paul O’Keeffe Trophy) Luke Turner; U/14 Player of Year (Eric Ellem Trophy) Nathan Timbrell; U/16 Player of Year (Frank Vergano Trophy) Jake Stewart; Ryde MP John Watkins, Holy Cross Cricket Club secretary John Kirkpatrick and Vice President Chris Mace. Alex Halliday won the Bill Winch Trophy for U/8 Player of Year.

Rugby league is also in Dane’s blood - he is the grandson of legendary Balmain half back Ron Clifford and son of bumping winger Paul Clifford, a try-scoring freak for the Tigers’ lower grade teams in the 1980s.

And Dane is following in their steps. The sporting whiz shows enormous potential as a hooker in the Holy Cross Rhinos’ all conquering U/12 Gold team that leads the Balmain Junior League competition. Will Foot hit the road?

REIGNING barefoot lawn bowls trophy holders Putney Tennyson put their title on the line this Sunday in the biannual battle against The Hunters Hill Club.

This is the eighth time the teams have clashed and despite tasting defeat from the previous two encounters Hunters Hill will be going all out to turn the tables and secure “The Foot” with a win at home this weekend.

Most recent Putney victories have been shrouded in controversy brought about by several questionable decisions made at their selection table. The club’s recent trend of choosing “outsiders” at the expense of their own home grown talent hasn’t registered well with some rank and file Putney members. Only the side’s recent good performances has kept a lid on the simmering resentment being felt by those left on the sidelines by the policy.

Many believe the selectors decision contributed to the hasty departure of former team captain and Putney club icon Dave “Dasher” McFarlane who relocated to the Central Coast to pursue business interests. McFarlane was unavailable for comment when we contacted him and his spokesperson refused to be drawn on the matter.

However, one disgruntled Putney member was recently overheard saying “Dasher must have known what was coming - it’s no wonder he took off up the coast. He went on to add “I may as well stay home and mow the lawn because I can’t get a look in”.

Hunters Hill on the other hand are not taking their recent defeats lying down and have adopted the attitude of the late Kerry Packer who said “Don’t get mad, get better!!” In an effort to reverse their fortunes Hunters Hill Club has undertaken extensive renovations to their bar facilities to help the team prepare for this much anticipated encounter.

Judging by the enthusiasm that many of his team hopefuls have embraced the new improvements, Hunters Hill captain John Owens will be having a few sleepless nights trying to finalise his squad.

Hunters Hill have been boosted by the support of Todd Morgan from Select Finance to help the team prepare for the challenge. Todd is a long time supporter of The Hunters Hill Club and will be the major sponsor on Sunday.

A glaring omission is all round sport - the incomparable Allan Beattie who is still seething over his non selection.
