Holy Cross Rhinos U/15 Div 1 team celebrate their Grand Final victory over Five Dock RSL at Leichhardt Oval last Sunday. TWT-on-the-spot-PHOTO Two years ago this Holy Cross team was struggling to win a game. Last Sunday under the coaching of Paul Jarvis and assistant John Stanton, they produced courage and skill to lower the boom on the high flying Dockers. Mercurial five eighth Corey Ashby spearheaded the victory with his silky attacking skills and was supported by forwards George Dickson, Nick Bligh, Adrian Tatola, Jarryd Clarke, Marcel Ferris, centres Leroy Buchanan and Steve Vail, half Joel Brooks, winger Sam Williams and fullback Dillon Walford. Tigers Centenary celebrations TWO games at the historic Sydney Cricket Ground are just part of the Wests Tigers plans for a bumper year of rugby league centenary celebrations in 2008. Unveiled at last weeks launch of the 2008 Centenary Calendar, Wests Tigers will play a home game in the opening round of the 2008 NRL season at the SCG. The opponent will be a foundation club. In round six, Wests Tigers return to the SCG to play South Sydney as part of the NRL Heritage Round to mark the anniversary of the first ever premiership round on April 20, 1908. To be held over the weekend of April 18-21, Wests Tigers and Souths will wear heritage jerseys in the game. The return to the SCG gives supporters the chance to reminisce about the glory days of Balmain Tigers and Western Suburbs Magpies. Balmain won 11 first grade premierships in 1915, 1916, 1917, 1919, 1920, 1924, 1939, 1944, 1946, 1947 and 1969. The Tigers finished the 1915 season as undefeated premiers under captain-coach Bill Kelly before beating Souths 5-3 in front of 7000 people at the SCG. Balmain went on to capture their third consecutive premiership in 1917. Although Souths ended the straight run in 1918, the Tigers bounced back to take the premiership in 1919 and 1920. In 1924, Balmain beat Souths 3-0 at the SCG in the first match to be broadcasted on radio. It took the Tigers until 1939 to win their next premiership, a 33-4 victory over Souths at the SCG. The 1940s saw Balmain dominate with premiership victories in 44, 46 and 47. Coached by Latchem Robinson, the 1944 team beat Newtown 12-8 in the grand final before a fiery 13-12 win over St George saw the Tigers take the title in 1946. A year later, Balmain won their third premiership in four years with a 13-9 victory over Canterbury. The 1969 grand final remains one of the greatest upsets in the game when Balmain overcame defending premiers and a red hot Souths team to win 11-2. As for Western Suburbs, they too have a proud history at the SCG - winning premierships in 1930, 1934, 1948 and 1952. The Magpies defeated St George 27-2 in the 1930 grand final and Easts 15-12 in the 1934 decider. In 1948, the Magpies defeated Balmain 8-5 in the grand final while in 1952, Wests beat Souths 21-15 in the season decider after the Rabbitohs won the premiership in 1950 and 1951. Wests lost to St George 22-0 in the 1961 grand final and 9-6 in the 62 grand final. A year later, St George beat Wests 8-3 in the mud with image of Norm Provan and Arthur Summons embracing at the end of the game now immortalized on the NRL trophy. Farah is battling a painful hip injury - a legacy of the Tigers heart-breaking 26-22 loss to the Roosters at Telstra Stadium last Friday night in yet another golden point extra time thriller. The representative rake - a strong contender for this years Dally M Player of the Year Award - has proved a model of consistency with skilful displays for the Tigers in the Telstra Cup. But Wests are resigned to losing their key playmaker for the weekend clash with young hooker Stuart Flanagan or utility forward Dene Halatau tipped to fill the breach. MEANWHILE international Tigers centre Paul Whatuira has agreed to play with Huddersfield Giants in the English Super League for the next three seasons. The Kiwi Test star will link up with his premiership-winning Tigers team mates John Skandalis and Shane Elford and Jamal Lolesi at Galpharm Stadium. 26 year old Whatuira - who has won NRL titles with both Penrith and Wests Tigers - said a strong desire to test his skills in Super League was the main reason he agreed to terms with the Giants. Spirit of North Ryde MEET the talented Holy Spirit Primary School North Ryde U/10 rugby league squad that has captured the imagination of the local sporting public with stand out performances on the football field in 2007. Under the coaching of former St George and star Ryde-Eastwood centre Brad Wilson, the Holy Spirit boys have achieved plenty of success - winning the Paul Sironen Catholic Schools Sevens and Balmain All Schools Knockout titles before taking on the best State primary schools at the recent NSWRL All Schools Carnival at St Marys. With Matt Wilson scoring a try from the first kick - the game was on and course set. In a fine display of skill and sportsmanship, the Holy Spirit boys won all three pool games against Clovelly, Helensburgh and Ramsgate to finish the top-ranked team in their section without conceding a point. The boys however were knocked out in the quarter finals by a strong Wamberal Primary School side. Ability Challenge Golf Day at Oatlands Swimming legend Dawn Fraser has offered two pieces of her sporting memorabilia for auction at the Ability Challenge Golf Day at Oatlands on Tuesday August 28. They will go under the hammer at the Ability Challenge Lunch, which supports the Royal Rehabilitation Centre Sydney, following the mornings golf event. The pieces are both limited editions with autographs, photos, gold medallions, pins and more. The winning bidders for these limited editions will also receive a letter from Dawn thanking them for their support of the challenge. For the past 40 years I have been asked to host or attend fundraising events all over the country, Ms Fraser said. It was only last year that my partner, Tim Konz, and I decided to offer my personal memorabilia to these fundraising events purely because the memorabilia has proven to produce more significant funds for these charities. These two collages are very special to me, being the first and second I have personally produced. They represent a time in my life that was full of hardship, perseverance, hard work and good fun. This combination ironically led me to achieving my ultimate goal ... gold. Eastwood Ryde Netball Semi-Finals A1:
