Sydney FC signed up to train at uni

Sydney FC stars Juninho and Tony Popovic will be regular fixtures on Macquarie University’s campus, thanks to a lucrative partnership with the glamour football club.

Under the agreement, Sydney FC’s Hyundai A-League players will train at the university’s sporting facilities, including the new $20 million Sports and Aquatic Centre.

The club will run their camps and holiday clinics at the university, taking full advantage of the seven hectares of sporting fields, comprised of up to five pitches.

A media internship program will also be established for Macquarie University students.

Vice Chancellor Professor Steven Schwartz says the partnership will also include a range of educational, corporate and research linkages, to the benefit of both organisations.

“We’re keen to help Sydney FC’s players access educational opportunities and establish their careers beyond football - after all teaching is what we do best.

“At the same time we’re keen to explore other prospects, both locally and internationally, because like Sydney FC we’re a young and vibrant Sydney-based organisation with a growing international profile,” he said.

Sydney FC CEO George Perry also speaks highly of the partnership.

“Sydney FC’s ground-breaking partnership with Macquarie University offers a great opportunity for the club, the players and the university.

“The more we work together, the more mutually beneficial initiatives will present themselves.”

Sydney FC won the Hyundai A-League competition’s inaugural title in 2005/06, and were finalists last year.
