Tigers’ jerseys: black is morbid

Dear Sir,

As a long-term supporter of Balmain Tigers - now Wests Tigers - I am appalled by the morbid, predominantly black jersey proposed as the Tigers’ main playing strip.

There’s nothing uplifting about the colour black. It might work all right with the New Zealand All Blacks. But the Wests Tigers aren’t the New Zealand All Blacks.

They’re the Wests Tigers. In my opinion the black should be used mainly as trimming - to artistically highlight and enhance the gold and white. But to use black as the predominant colour (except perhaps as part of an alternate strip out of respect to Western Suburbs), in my opinion, would make the team look dead and buried by the time they took the field. It’s downright dispiriting.

Proposed sign ‘will pollute’

Dear Sir,

Ryde City Council is currently considering a development application (75/ 2008) for a large ‘Yes Optus’ neon sign, internally illuminated and uplit 24 hours a day, on Epping Road.

But, like most things involving the many corporate businesses moving into North Ryde, most residents of the area know nothing about it.

Along with turning our streets into a corporate carpark, Optus now wants to join Avaya in turning the bedrooms of North Ryde into garishly lit nightclubs. Not to mention adding ever more visual and environmental pollution to our community at a time when most people are working on reducing their impacts.

North Ryde has a long and fine history as a community of people, and if corporates want to join us it is time they acknowledged it.

Far from accepting that business will make impositions on the local community, note that we expect you to treat us the same way we treat each other - good neighbours consider others.

What has our MP achieved?

Dear Sir,

Prime Minister Rudd has marked his first 100 days in office by cynically releasing a 55-page document to spruik his government’s so-called achievements.

What has the new Member for Bennelong, Ms Maxine McKew, achieved? Apart from having a cut of meat named after her by a local butcher and attending a few local events reported in your pages I, for one, would like to know what she has done.

The novelty has worn off. It’s now time to begin scrutinising our celebrity MP and her government.

Bloodbath in Eastwood

Dear Sir,

Your headline exclaiming ‘Bloodbath in Eastwood’ (TWT 19/3) has infuriated me.

Have our children not got enough to deal with? Why would you make life even scarier by plastering nonsense all over the front of a free newspaper that they have no choice about encountering.

Do I have to remind you there was no bloodbath in Eastwood? Do I even need to point out that everything beyond a man acting suspiciously and exchanging limited fire with police, in your article is pure speculation?

I am not denying a dangerous and worrying event occurred last week. I am appalled at your attempt to have your advertisers better served with such a terrifying headline.

Dear sir,

I am thankful to Eastwood Police for risking their lives to protect our community on March 10.

I think local residents and businesses literally dodged a bullet that day due to their bravery. Considering the amount of ammunition reportedly carried by the gunman, the outcome could have well been very different.

Dear Sir,

I refer to your dramatic TWT front page headline (March 19, 2008) saying Prompt Police Action Prevents Bloodbath in Eastwood.

Fortunately the Police couldn’t prevent the Eastwood centric one that unfolded on November 24, 2007!

Call to stop govt electricity plan

Dear Sir,

I am former electricity worker with 30 years experience in generation and distribution.

I object to leasing generating stations and the sale of distribution systems be-cause of the failures of private ownership and pub-lic/private partnerships to provide more, let alone better roads, tunnels, hospitals, schools, railways, waterworks, electricity works and gasworks.

Generating stations will be neglected with no planning being carried out for future needs. Distribution systems will not be increased in size to cope with load growth and maintenance will be minimal because profit will dictate work done.

If we don’t have the cash, we should borrow funds and build our own roads, schools and hospitals. Let us stop this lease and clearance sale before it begins.
