Tigers’ workhorse ready for Origin

THEY don’t breed them tougher or stronger than Wests Tigers’ workhorse forward Chris Heighington (pictured) in the NRL premiership.

On the eve of this year’s State of Origin series, the industrious Heighington was a candidate for a NSW back row spot following strong performances for the Tigers and Country teams in recent weeks.

Heighington put himself in the Origin mix with a big game for Country in their 22-all draw with City recently at WIN Stadium and is sure to come into calculations during the 2008 series.

The rugged back rower - who has won the Tigers’ defensive award for the past two years - is one of the competition’s big improvers and the club’s most consistent forward this season.

Now in his sixth year with the Tigers, Heighington is firmly established in Tim Sheens’ first grade outfit and has already fielded offers from rival clubs.

Club officials are confident of re-signing the 26 year old forward who comes off contract at the end of this current season. Heighington played his junior football with the Umina Bunnies in the Central Coast Rugby League before trialling with the Balmain club and making an impression in the Premier League competition.

It has taken the powerfully built second rower a few years to consolidate a top grade spot but with 94 matches under his belt is now considered one of the Tigers’ senior forwards.

A mature Heighington - who helped the Tigers win a memorable premiership in 2005 - believes he can handle the step up in class to Origin if given the opportunity.

MEANWHILE Wests Tigers will rush star hooker Robbie Farah and five eighth Benji Marshall into the side for Sunday’s clash with Newcastle at EnergyAustralia Stadium - subject to passing fitness tests.

Coming off a bye, the Tigers are desperate to have their chief playmakers back in action for the vital match against the Knights.

Rolfe has passion to coach

GOLFING pro Neil Rolfe achieved plenty as a junior golfer at North Ryde Golf Club before turning professional.

He represented the club at all levels and in competition has always shown a real passion on the golf course.

Now he enjoys teaching the game to prospective golfers of all ages at the local club where his promising career began.

Neil,27, and recently married to Alison has spent nine years working with club pro Marty Line in educating people on the finer points of golf.

A fully qualified professional with the Australian PGA, Rolfe shows great enthusiasm towards working with a player and setting goals to improve their skills.

“I also have a great time with the beginner golfers who are looking to try something new and I do believe that our Club offers a friendly and relaxed environment to come and learn to play” he said.

Neil has experience in coaching all levels of players from the brand new golfers to the elite level players.

“We coach ages from 9 years up and offer private tuition or group sessions. People don’t need any experience or equipment to come to learn how to play because I’m fully equipped. And the local talent is evident - North Ryde won the NSW Junior Pennant in 2007 and our Major Pennant team has been a finalist in their division for the past two years” he added.

North Ryde Golf Club is available for play seven days per week and the golf shop is open from dawn till dusk each day.

In addition to coaching, the Club provides professional clubfitting services and offer an exceptional range of golf equipment: clothing , bags , buggies and accesssories to cater for all golfing needs. Phone 9888 5518.

Wayne a bowls whiz at 83

NORTH Ryde RSL Bowling Club recently held their annual Major Singles Championship which was won by Wayne Pleming, who defeated Michael Tims 31-13.

So what, you might say or well done Wayne! However it should be pointed out that Wayne is an active 83 years of age and this was his second consecutive major singles win and fourth triumph overall against rivals much younger than himself.

His tremendous skills and experience were never more tested than in this year’s competition, particularly in the semi final duel with David Baker. Wayne was trailing 27-15 and staring at defeat before the rain came down. The greens became heavier and Pleming was able to draw on all of his experience and rally to a 31-27 victory - a superb effort.

In the final, spectators were treated to a wonderful exhibition of quality bowls.

Even though Tims - one of North Ryde’s outstanding young bowlers - played an excellent game, he was no match for the dexterity of Pleming who produced an almost faultless game by displaying his well honed skills.

People are always amazed at Wayne’s physical capabilities on the bowling green, his willingness to encourage and coach other bowlers and admire his complete dedication to the sport.

This was a fine achievement by Pleming and pundits wonder if there were many other bowlers aged in their eighties that have captured major singles championships at club level. It proves that the physical disabilities brought on by ageing can be overcome by a positive attitude and a firm belief in your bowling prowess. Congratulations Wayne, you are a real champion.

Capt Lee stars in State Cup

LEE BENNETT Balmain Ryde Eastwood Tigers captain shared the honours with Western Suburbs Magpies skipper Nathan Waters and a young Tigers fan when they unveiled a plaque to commemorate the first Rugby League game ever played in Australia at Birchgrove Oval exactly 100 years earlier as part of the centenary celebrations on Sunday April 20.

In 1908 Balmain defeated Wests 24-0 in the inaugural game and while Balmain Tigers again repeated their historical score of 24 points the Western Suburbs Magpies decided that history would not repeat itself on this occasion and notched up 36 points of their own in an entertaining display of open football for the large crowd in attendance.
