‘Mini’ art show for Willandra

Ryde’s Willandra Art Gallery, at 770 Victoria Road, Ryde, is hosting a ‘9 x 5’ exhibition of works by the Ryde Art Society, beginning this Saturday (May 17) from 2pm. Mirroring the exhibition of the same name held at Melbourne’s Buxton’s Art Gallery in 1889, displayed works will be painted on a 9in x 5in surface.

The original exhibition - featuring works painted on cigar box lids - divided critics, with one suggesting it was “a pain in the eye”. Featured artists included Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton and Charles Condor.

Ryde Art Society’s paintings will be done in oil, watercolour, acrylic and pastel, under glass. Admission is free and the exhibition will run through to mid June. Gallery hours are Monday to Thursday 10am till 3pm, and 2pm till 4pm weekends. For more information phone 9808 2254.
