TIGERS CAPTAIN 05 Versus TIGERS CAPTAIN 08

Tigers fans and supporters welcome back to Leichhardt Oval HQ this Sunday 2005 Tigers NRL Premiership winning Captain Scott Prince and wish him well, but not a victory. Sorry Scott, you’ll have to settle for second prize.

SCOTT PRINCE

BRETT HODGSON

Hodgson signs with Giants

WESTS Tigers’ inspirational captain and fullback Brett Hodgson is the latest high-profile NRL player to sign a lucrative deal with an overseas club.

Hodgson announced last week that he had secured a two year deal to play with the Huddersfield Giants in the English Super League competition from 2009.

The City Origin custodian underlined his value to the Tigers by turning in a polished display in his side’s 38-26 win over Newcastle last Sunday at EnergyAustralia Stadium.

He scored two neat tries and booted five goals to spearhead a hard fought victory and swell his career points tally to 1213.

Star hooker Robbie Farah and five eighth Benji Marshall made solid comebacks from injury while impact forwards Chris Heighington and Ben Te’o produced strong games to keep the Tigers’ entrenched in the top eight.

“It is a new chapter in my football career and in my life as well,” said Hodgson who’ll serve out the remainder of his contract this season with the Tigers.

“I’ve had some wonderful memories and definitely feel this is my home” he added.

Tigers coach Tim Sheens said Hodgson would always be thought of highly at the club.

MEANWHILE former Wests Tigers’ premiership winning skipper Scott Prince and key forward Anthony Laffranchi return to their old stamping ground at Leichhardt Oval this Sunday with the high flying Gold Coast Titans.

Everything points to a crackerjack contest between two of the most enterprising sides in the competition.

Rugby colts Japan tour

HUNTERS HILL Junior Rugby Club will create history later this year when their talented U/13 colts embark on a goodwill tour of Japan.

The Hillies are set to break new ground in September when the Juniors travel abroad for the first time to pit their skills against the top Japanese teams in their age group.

Hunters Hill U/13 touring squad is: Harrison Armstrong, Guy Beever, Matt Borozan, Lochie Burke, Ben Copping , James Costigan, Mitchell De Lorenzo, Rory Fereday, Jake Henwood, Andy Kellaway, Nick Kellaway, Mitchell Kenny, Tom Meaney, Josh Mitchell, Brenton Mooney, Jack Pixley and Lachie Shaw.

Tour organiser Kim Beever said the main aim of the tour is primarily rugby based.

“We’ll play against teams that we anticipate are well drilled and organised with good levels of skill,” she explained.

“While the rugby side of the tour is important, we realise the opportunity to explore Tokyo and surrounding areas and being immersed in the Japanese should provide for a wonderful and enriching experience for all participants.”

“For their part, the boys are aware of the responsibilities before them as they aren’t only representing their club, but also their families, community and indeed country.

“We also hope this will open pathways for clubs in Japan to come and experience a Sydney way of life and rugby in years to come. Of course we would want Hunters Hill Juniors to be one of the “go to” clubs for any potential touring sides given its status as one of the largest junior rugby clubs in Australia and its tremendous geographical location within Sydney” she said.

Hunters Hill Junior Rugby Club will host two fund raising events - the first being a Trivia Night on June 21 at Hunters Hill Club. Tickets are $25 per head or tables of ten for $250. Great prizes on offer. Part of the Trivia Night proceeds will help fund a new Clubhouse at Boronia Park Oval.

Second function is the Bledisloe Rugby Luncheon on Thursday July 24 at the American Club in the city from 12.30pm.

Guest speaker is former Wallaby coach Alan Jones AO. Tickets $150 per head with tables of ten for $1500.

Additionally, sponsorships are available and most welcome. Bookings or sponsorship inquiries Kerry Beever 0414 295 569.

Reds trounce Old Boys

DRUMMOYNE first grade rugby team jumped to the top of the NSW Suburban Kentwell Cup table after whipping St Patricks Old Boys 33-7 last Saturday at Hudson Park.

The Dirty Reds struggled to convert their scoring opportunities in the opening stanza with Suburban representative prop David Hankinson held up over the line after constant raids.

Drummoyne half Ben Leaupepe gave his side a 7-0 lead at the break with a try and conversion. The game opened up in the second half with two tries to prop Tuainafua Veiru, who continues his amazing try scoring streak with five in three matches. A mid field turnover led to a 30 metre sprint by captain Nathan Landrey before offloading to lock David Mew for a fourth try that clinched the bonus point. A final try by lock Peter Goodall after a tackle-busting run by winger Alex Farani sealed the win.

Drummoyne seconds lost 13-12; Colts won 15-5; thirds won 31-8; fourths lost 17-10 and fifths won on forfeit. The Dirty Reds host Forest this Saturday at Drummoyne Oval.
