beat a hot field for the number seven jumper while Halatau
was named hooker. Classy Tigers equal record WESTS Tigers rugby league team gave comeback prop Todd Payten (pictured) an NRL milestone match to remember after thumping the Bulldogs 56-4 last Sunday at ANZ Stadium.
The ball playing Payten - sidelined for three months with a torn hamstring - turned in a strong performance in his 200th first grade career match to help keep the Tigers in finals contention. With star hooker-half Robbie Farah and five eighth Benji Marshall at their creative best, the Tigers raced in ten tries in a fine exhibition of pace, strength and skill. The winning margin of 52 points equalled the club record set in 2005 following a 54-2 drubbing of the Bulldogs at the same venue. Farah and Marshall had a hand in seven of the Tigers tries and were ably supported by pint-sized fullback Shannon Gallant, hooker John Morris, utility Dene Halatau and forwards Chris Heighington, Ben Teo, Bronson Harrison and Daine Laurie. Gallant, deputising for the injured Brett Hodgson, collected a try double along with inform back rower Heighington.

It was the ninth loss of the season by four points or less for the Tigers who were best served by Corey Payne, fullback Rhys Hanbury and forward David Gower. Holy Cross College stars Aaron Woods and Junior Rogica turned in strong performances to help the Australian Schoolboys crush the Great Britain Academy 68-6 in the first test in Townsville last Saturday. Bookings Tracey Aria 9556-0464 or traceya@tigers.org.au Magic moments for talented cub Matt IT was a weekend to savour for emerging Wests Tigers utility back Matt Ryan. Matt, pictured with his father Trevor Ryan - an ex NSW forward and Balmain Hall of Fame inductee - was named as a centre in the North Ryde Hawks Team of the Half Century last Friday night at the Clubs Jubilee Dinner at North Ryde RSL Community Club. Two days later he starred for the Wests Tigers U/20 team in a gutsy 30-24 victory over the Bulldogs in the Toyota Cup at ANZ Stadium. Ryan scored a crucial second half try and proved a handful for the Bullpups with his strong running out wide. The Tiger cubs were best served by 18 year old lock Matt Hyland, back rower Simon Dwyer, hooker Ben Falcone, centre Blake Ayshford, halves Darren Nicholls and Wayde Dunley, winger Ben Vengoa and the tall and powerful Ryan. Former Kangaroo internationals Paul Sironen and Ian Thomson and current NRL stars Dene Halatau and Mitchell Pearce were named in a powerful North Ryde squad alongside Tigers personality and club legend Ron Ryan. The North Ryde Team of the Half Century is: Rod Pethybridge, Mark Lawson, Matt Ryan, Wayne Wigham, Grant Wheelhouse, Ron Ryan (captain), Mitchell Pearce, Paul Dalziel, Peter Murphy, Paul Sironen, Ian Thomson, Dene Halatau, Garry Webster; Interchange: Paul Duncan, Graham Tutt, Brett Rodgers, Dean Webster. Coach: Keith Aggett; Manager: Phil Allen. * * * A SHOCK omission from the Hawks Team of the Half Century was former dashing back and try scoring freak Col Lawson. Big Lawso was a shattered man when told the news but has vowed to prove the judges wrong this summer by weaving his magic for Putney Pirates in the 2008-09 Ryde Eastwood Touch Football competition. * * * HIS son Jarrod is starring for Balmain-Ryde Eastwood in the VB State Cup - now Putney personality Rod Farlow can add another string to his sporting bow. Versatile Rod has acquired a new nickname - Rodaldo - after scoring the winning goal for Gladesville Sharks in their 1-0 triumph over Roselea in the Gladesville-Hornsby Soccer Over 35s competition. A superbly fit Farlow demonstrated his kicking skills by latching onto a volley from 40 metres out and producing a rocket that left the Roselea keeper spreadeagled. Rod has since rejected offers from European soccer agents to concentrate on a promising touch footy career.

Japanese stint for promising catcher PLAYING baseball in Japan is a dream opportunity for any aspiring young sportsman. Eleven year old Ryde schoolboy Adam Barbaro (pictured) realised that dream recently when he represented Australia at the World Childrens Baseball Fair & Exchange Games in the Japanese town of Aichi.
Utility player Adam - a talented catcher who also shone at third base, shortstop and as a pitcher on tour - was one of three NSW juniors selected for the tour and grabbed the opportunity with both hands. The Fair was founded over a decade ago by Sadaharu Oh and Hank Aaron to promote worldwide expansion of baseball and provide an opportunity to develop international friendship, goodwill and cultural understanding among the youth of the world. Over 20 countries from around the world participated at the event with Adam lining up against some of Japans most gifted junior players in some of the best baseball stadiums on the planet. It was an experience to savour for the baseball whiz, who has returned home a more polished player after impressive displays at the International Exchange Games. Adam is a product of North Ryde Junior Baseball where he has played since the age of 5 - winning three consecutive A Grade Grand Finals and spearheading a title trifecta as opening pitcher. Barbaro was a Ryde Hornsby Baseball League rep last season - winning a silver medal at the 2007 Baseball NSW Sydney Junior Championships and picking up the Coachs Award for his efforts. The winter months have proved quite hectic for versatile Adam who juggles his soccer duties with Gladesville Ravens and stepping out in the Baseball NSW U/12 Elite Winter Development program. Barbaro plays soccer for the Ravens U/11 Div 1 side that has won three Gladesville-Hornsby titles in four seasons and has represented Ryde Zone PSSA in cricket, soccer and softball. He also played in winning teams for Ryde East Public School in the AFL Paul Kelly Cup and Balmain All Schools rugby league competitions. Fight Night at Ryde-Eastwood NSW bantamweight boxing champion Dean Livanos of Denistone has unfinished business when he steps into the ring this Friday night against Papuan Kartu Arang at Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club. Livanos, a TWT Club Six/Ryde Sports Foundation Sports Star Award winner who claimed the State crown after stopping Arang back in February, is primed for another strong effort against the former world kick boxing champ. After 35 bouts and three State titles as an amateur, the hard-hitting Livanos has quickly left his mark in the pro ranks under the expert guidance of trainers Sonny and Bill Kearney at Burwood PCYC. The Fight Night features some of Australias most exciting amateur boxers including the lightning fast Paul Angyal, hard hitting Byron McSweeny and Ivan Bakic, a top middleweight prospect. Nine amateur bouts will support the Livanos v Arang II clash with doors open at 6.30pm. First fight 7.30pm. Tickets $35. Rydes Olympic Games hopefuls DEPUTY Premier and Ryde MP John Watkins has offered his best wishes to two local athletes representing Australia at the Beijing Olympics. Mr Watkins said Ryde rower Matthew Ryan and long-distance walker Adam Rutter are not only representing Australia, but also the Ryde community, at the biggest sporting event in the world. I congratulate Matthew and Adam on the hard work, dedication and training that will see them compete at the Games, he said. The community of Ryde is very proud of their efforts and right behind them all the way. Mr Watkins said Ryan, a member of the Mens Rowing Fours, was a product of the elite NSW Institute of Sport program. He was one of 86 athletes from the NSW Institute of Sport chosen for the national team including medal hopefuls such as shooter Michael Diamond, race walker Jane Saville and cyclist Bradley McGee. This is a strong representation from the NSW Institute of Sport program, Mr Watkins said. The Iemma Government will provide more than $8.5 million this year to help current Institute of Sport athletes follow in the footsteps of Olympians such as Matt. Rutter attended Pennant Hills High School and is one of the youngest members of the Australian athletics team. Adam is one of 24 debutants in the Athletics team competing in Beijing and has a bright future ahead of him. Ryan will compete in the Mens Rowing Fours with heats this Saturday, semi finals on August 13 and final on August 14. Rutter will contest the Mens 50km walk on August 22. * * *
Gladesville Bowling Clubs triumphant Mens Fours team that clinched the Zone 10 Pennant flag with an undefeated record. They competed at the State play offs at Bathurst last weekend.
