Olympic gold for local sailor Page

HUNTERS HILL Sailing Club product Malcolm Page is celebrating a gold medal victory in the Men’s 470 (Two Person Dinghy) at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Thirty six year old Malcolm - the brother of current Hunters Hill Sailing Club president David Page - teamed with Nathan Wilmont on Monday to win the 470 Class with 44 points overall at Qingdao.

The five time world champions, who placed 12th in Athens in 2004, showed skill and poise to clinch their first Olympic gold medal by finishing first in the medal race.

Page and Willmont, who won gold at the 2007 Olympic Test Event, led by 22 points before the final race - staving off challenges from silver medallists Great Britain and France (bronze).

Malcolm learned to sail at Hunters Hill Sailing Club in a Manly Junior and Flying 11.

Members of HHSC are cheering overtime at the Beijing Olympics.

Two other members of the Australian Olympic team learnt to sail as junior sailors at Hunters Hill.

Anthony Nossiter, 35, finished 16th in the heavyweight dinghy-finn class at his third Olympic Games. In Sydney 2000, he came 13th and at the 2004 Games in Athens he turned in impressive performances to finish sixth.

Nossiter - who learned to sail at HHSC in a Manly Junior when he was 8 years old - has also competed in the Volvo Ocean Race and America’s Cup.

Ben Austin, 26, and Nathan Outteridge finished fifth the Open Skiff 49er class.

First time Olympic competitors, Nathan and Ben won bronze at the 2007 ISAF World Sailing Championship and gold in the 2008 World Championship.

Ben sailed a Laser Radial at Hunters Hill Sailing Club.

Hanbury points spree

BALMAIN-Ryde Eastwood rugby league team ended weeks of torment with a thumping 66-22 victory over Newcastle last Saturday in VB State Cup action at Leichhardt Oval.

Talented fullback Rhys Hanbury (pictured) produced an outstanding display to earn Player of the Match honors and help lift the Tigers off the bottom of the table.

Hanbury nabbed two tries, set up another five and booted nine goals for a personal haul of 26 points and combined with five eighth Mick Moran to blitz the Knights.

Other players to impress were half back Stephen Moses, centre Gavin Cowan, back rowers David Gower and Loni Vunakece, lock Jarred Farlow, hooker Lewis Brown and prop Ryan Tandy.

Cowan showed plenty of dash out wide with wingers Lee Bennett and Billy Callaway capitalising on the slick service provided by Moses and Moran.
