Tigers legends at Charity Sports lunch

BALMAIN rugby league legends Paul Sironen (pictured) and Gary Freeman are guest speakers at this Friday’s Sportsmen’s Charity luncheon at the Hunters Hill Club, 12 Madeline Street, Hunters Hill from 11.30am.

The former Tigers’ internationals will take a trip down memory lane as they recall the highs and lows and funnier moments of their distinguished football careers.

Sironen of North Ryde played a record 246 first grade games during an eventful 13 seasons with the Balmain club.

He played 21 Tests for Australia and is one of only four forwards in history to make three Kangaroo tours after making an impact in England and France with the 1986, 1990 and 1994 Ashes-winning teams.

Big “Sirro” - who played in Australia’s 1992 World Cup-winning side - played his junior football with the Gladesville Sports and North Ryde Hawks.

Today he is a director on the Balmain Football Club board and last Saturday coached the Holy Cross Rhinos to an U/12 Balmain Junior League premiership win over Concord-Burwood Wolves at Leichhardt Oval.

Sironen was named in the Balmain and Wests Tigers’ and Balmain Junior League Teams of the Century, North Ryde’s Jubilee Team of the Half Century and inducted into the Tigers’ Hall of Fame.

Gary ‘Whiz’ Freeman played in Balmain’s 1988 and ‘89 Grand Final teams and was regarded as one of the most competitive half backs in the game, captaining New Zealand in the Test arena before coaching the Kiwis’ national team in 2001-02.

The popular Fox Sports commentator played a total of 151 games during stints with Balmain, Easts, Penrith and Parramatta and took out the Dally M Player of the Year Award in 1992.

Joining Sironen and Freeman at the Sports-men’s Luncheon will be Wallaby and ACT Brumbies back Mark Gerrard and rugby identity Peter O’Meara.

Channel 9 sports commentator Andrew Voss will MC the event with veteran comedian Ray Seagar to entertain.

Tickets $90 include two course lunch and drinks. Auction proceeds on the day will benefit the Giant Steps charity. Bookings and inquiries 9817-3324.
