the new MP for Ryde is coming down to earth after his snap election
by a record landslide margin in the October 18 byelection caused
by the sudden resignation of Ryde MP and Deputy Premier John Watkins.
John Watkins has returned from Europe and the wedding of his eldest daughter Melanie and started work as CEO of Alzheimers Australia NSW at North Ryde last Monday. We caught up with him Wednesday as he officially opened the Muscular Dystrophy new office at Shepherd’s Bay, Meadowbank. ‘BANK
ROBBERS’ was going to be the heading of an editorial I was
going to do this week but the bandits who blew up the North Ryde
Community Bank stole my thunder. The
real big time ‘Bank Robbers’ are the Big Banks themselves
and greedy financial speculators who play the stock markets shuffling
paper money. Rowan
Williams the Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury commenting on the
cause of the credit crunch last week said “I was going to suggest
Satan. Clearly as religious leaders we want to say the root of it
all is human greed”. Together
with the Archbishop of York John Sentamu they attacked bankers ands
traders as responsible for the financial crisis. Archbishop
Williams called for scrutiny and regulation of the financial world
while Archbishop Sentamu branded traders who cashed in on falling
share prices in HBOS as “bank robbers” and “asset
strippers”. They
noted that Islamic banks which operate within the restrictions set
by sharia law have been little affected by the credit crunch. *

STATE GOVERNOR Professor Marie Bashir AO was special guest of
honour at Hunters Hill High School’s 50th Birthday cocktail
party and art show on Friday at the school. Yesterday
afternoon she was busy at Government House swearing in the four
new State MPs including the new Member for Ryde Victor Dominello
in between a dental appointment in the morning and another official
duty in the evening, so she told JB. *
