Krejza spins his way into record books

FORMER Balmain spinner Jason Krejza (pictured) etched his name in the record books last Friday after a stunning eight wicket haul on debut in the fourth Test against India in Nagpur.

Krejza snared the remarkable figures of 8-215 off 44 overs to become the third Australian bowler to bag eight wickets on debut behind Albert Trott (8-43 v England 1895) and swingman Bob Massie (8-84 v England 1972).

It was also the eighth time a player from any nation had grabbed eight wickets on debut in a Test with Krejza joining the likes of Indian leg spinner Narendra Hirwani (8-61 & 8-75 v West Indies 1988); South African all rounder Lance Klusener (8-64 v India 1996) and slow left arm West Indian bowler Alf Valentine (8-104 v England 1950) on a distinguished honor roll.
Overlooked for the opening three Tests, the 25 year old Krejza made the most of his opportunity to re-ignite Australia’s hopes in the series-deciding test.

Krejza grabbed three wickets on the opening day - then took all five to fall last Friday to help dismiss the Indians for 441.
He claimed the scalps of Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, VVS Laxman, Sourav Ganguly, MS Dohni, Zaheer Khan, Amit Mishra and Ishant Sharma for a slice of cricket history.

Krejza later took 4-143 to finish with match figures of 12-358.

It has been a turbulent rise to the top for Krejza, a gifted young cricketer, who left the Balmain club and NSW Cricket two summers ago to link with Tasmania.

Having achieved Sydney first grade premiership success with the Fairfield-Liverpool club during his teens, the talented off spinner linked with Balmain and forced his way into the NSW Speedblitz Blues squad.

Moss spearheads win

SYDNEY returned to the first grade cricket winners list with a comprehensive victory over Penrith last Saturday at Howell Oval.
All rounder Jon Moss and paceman Adam Maher proved the architects - bagging eight wickets between them to help the Tigers rout Penrith for 111 and secure a much-needed win and six valuable competition points.
Resuming at 5-50 and chasing the Tigers’ total of 201, the Penrith team struggled against the pace of Moss and Maher and were bundled out in the over.

Moss turned in a fine exhibition of seam bowling to snare 5-31 off 18 overs while the rampaging Maher, who recently gained NSW Second X1 honors, lent solid support with 3-31 off 15.

Sydney keeper James Crosthwaite capped a big game with six catches and a whirlwind knock of 64 as the Tigers’ posted 4-205 in their second innings.

Crosthwaite smashed two sixes and 12 boundaries and faced only 53 balls.

Tim Sparke regained some batting confidence with an unbeaten 74 off 104 balls - cracking ten boundaries.

Young openers Justin Moore (20) and Anthony Brooks (21) looked the goods before they were dismissed with 47 runs on the board.

All rounder Darren Ettridge compiled 17 not out for the Tigers.

MEANWHILE Sydney advanced to the quarter finals of the inaugural Twenty20 competition after impressive wins over Gordon and Sydney University last Sunday.

They will meet North Sydney on Sunday December 14 at a venue to be decided.

MATTHEW TRODDEN reports that fine batting from James Crosthwaite (53) and Darren Ettridge (52) and brilliant bowling from Andrew Hoppitt (5-26) steered the Tigers to a comfortable win over Gordon.

The second game was a thriller with Sydney edging out the Students by one run after top contributions from Darren Smith (30), Nidhu Gotadke (30) and Luke Donovan (2-17).

Despite a loss to Wests in the final match, the Tigers - led by Crosthwaite (87 not out) and Tim Sparke (33) - scraped through to the finals.

Historic bowls title for Brush Park duo

IT was a proud and historic moment for lawn bowlers Gwen Laurence and son Neil Laurence recently when they captured the 2008 Brush Park Bowling Club Mixed Pairs championship.

Gwen,78, and Neil (pictured left) created some type of bowls record when they became the first mother-son pairing to win a mixed title in the Zone 10 district after posting a 25-18 victory over the capable mother-son duo of Pierina,69, and Paul Dick (right). Also pictured with the record-breaking foursome is Brush Park Bowling Club president Keith Fisher.

In a thrilling finale, the lead exchanged seven times before Neil and Gwen produced some classic bowling to edge out their opponents. The celebrations continued for Gwen of West Ryde days later when she clinched the womens minor singles title after toppling Patrice Nealon 31-15 in the final.

Neil, 52, previously won the mens’ 2006 minor singles title - the same year that Paul, 41, was crowned major singles champion. TWT on-the-spot PHOTO.
