By thinking pink they set a record Sixth-graders Mannon White and Nicole Bugeja (above) have set a fund-raising record at St Therese Primary School, Denistone by amassing $2,887 for the fight against breast cancer. What began as a plan to target fellow students, teachers and staff, transformed into a think pink crusade with the 12-year-olds launching a six-week campaign by hosting events involving media, marketing and advertising. It began with visits to local businesses and to St Thereses Church. We began by selling pink ribbons, magnets, pens, wristbands, ribbons and nail files to parishioners and local businesses, said Nicole. Over one weekend we raised more than $800 just by speaking at the three masses. School principal Steve Borthwick helped them extend the reach of their campaign by making it a community event sponsored by Christianes Hair Design, McDonaghs Meat Boutique and New Zealand Natural Ice Cream. In addition, the girls hosted a mufti day which included a pink fashion show and morning tea. Seeing them co-ordinate the morning tea, wear pink t-shirts, contact the local media and organise a guest speaker, it was evident there was nothing casual about the event and they were serious about their mission and attitudes towards breast cancer, Mr Borthwick said.
