Moss & Arnold spur Tigers to victory

Around the Wickets with CHRIS KARAS

TRUMP cards Russel Arnold and Jon Moss demonstrated their value with brilliant displays for Sydney in a limited overs victory over premiers St George in Sydney first grade cricket action last Sunday at Hurstville Oval.

Moss, the Tigers’ Mr Consistent, continued his sound form with a blazing innings of 89 off 90 balls and figures of 2-26 (off eight overs) with the ball to help secure his team’s fifth win of the season.

The Sydney skipper smashed three sixes and six boundaries during his entertaining knock and was supported by former Sri Lankan international Arnold, who cracked an elegant 59 off 50 balls as the Tigers amassed 9-273.

Arnold’s half century featured two sixes and six boundaries as the pair combined for a fifth wicket stand of 97.

In reply, St George were bundled out for 239 in the 49th over with solid contributions from former NSW and Victorian representative batsman Graeme Rummans (84), opener Mark Stoneman (46) and Kevin Pillay (31).

Other Sydney players to shine with the bat were Anthony Brooks (35 not out) and keeper James Crosthwaite (31) after the Tigers had slumped to 4-53.

Seamer Steve Green (4-45 off ten overs) and Phil Wells (2-42) were the pick of the Saints’ bowling attack.

The win capped a big weekend for Arnold, who bagged the figures of 5-56 off 19 overs with his spin bowling on the opening day of a two-day clash with University of NSW at Village Green last Saturday.

At stumps the Students were 7-247 following half centuries by skipper Tim Lang (73 not out) and openers Mitchell Gowland (55) and Murray Creed (51).

Young guns stand tall at senior grade level

WHIZ kids Connor Rae and Ben John grabbed the limelight with mature knocks in senior company for the Ryde-Hunters Hill club in the Gladesville Cricket Association competition.

An unbeaten 64 by 12 year-old Rae and an equally impressive 41 from representative all rounder John,11, helped the senior Pirates No 1 team secure a resounding victory over Silent Warriors in a C Grade fixture at Morrison Park last weekend.

Rae, a Gladesville Cawsey Shield rep making his debut for the senior squad and John playing only his second game, shared a 62 run partnership to show their older colleagues (including their fathers and long-standing team stalwarts John Rae and Danny John) how to bat against a determined Warriors side missing a few key players.

Coming in at five with the Pirates’ score at 3-22 and chasing a small target of 45 on the first day, young John - an U/12 Pirates junior and number three bat for this season’s Gladesville Cawsey Shield side, batted comfortably before being joined by Rae junior, an U/13 Pirate and Northern Districts rep batsman, with the total on 63.

Rae matched John stroke for stroke and they both finished not out at the end of the first day with the score on 4-125.

With the boys pushing for half centuries last Saturday, John fell to the second ball of the afternoon but Rae moved on from 37 to chalk up a fine half century which allowed the Pirates to declare at 9-180.

Swing merchant Alex Martin - who skippered Gladesville in this year’s Martin Shield Open age inter district series - destroyed the Warriors with figures of 6-18 to set up an outright win.

Other highlights included a stylish 93 from Gladesville RSL Green all rounder Tim Byrne against Holy Cross in A Grade.

Byrne shared an opening stand of 152 with Martin Cook - but all to no avail as the Greens crashed to a first innings loss.

Balmain all rounder Geordie Hawkins hit 62 and snared 5-45 against Concord RSL while Prashant Kumar compiled a majestic 88 for Indefatigables/Breakfast Point against Gladesville RSL Gold.

Maxine bowls them over

Bennelong MP Maxine McKew tried her hand at lawn bowls when she recently attended the West Epping Bowling & Recreation Club.

A voluntary working bee was well underway with members painting and doing minor repairs at the club in preparation for the recent Open Day. Ms McKew demonstrated her bowling style after expert training by Club President Tony Bromley.

She also enjoyed a delicious barbecue lunch prepared by Eileen Bromley and David Kensett-Smith.

RYDE City Mayor Vic Tagg recently organised a barbecue for Ryde Eastwood Touch Football Association juniors at Morrison Park Putney. The RETFA patron - pictured with a group of boy and girl players - provided the meat for a post match sausage sizzle after watching the juniors in action in the summer competitions. A fit-looking Vince Marando again did a superb job on the barbecue - serving up a treat for the youngsters. Well done Vic and Vince. TWT on-the-spot PHOTO.

STRONG running Balmain-Ryde Eastwood forward Alan Schirnack is this year’s winner of the Adam Gardiner Memorial ‘Best Forward’ Award. Schirnack is pictured with Adam’s wife Trish and father Terry Gardiner at the Tigers’ recent Awards Night at Balmain Leagues Club. The award commemorates the life of former Tigers’ assistant Jersey Flegg and Premier League coach Adam Gardiner who lost a brave battle with amyloidosis in 2006 at the age of 35.

St Mark’s in top form for Pacific School Games

BERNADETTE Flannery and Louise Pool are preparing to pit their skills against some of the best junior athletes in the world at the 2008 Pacific School Games in Canberra this week.

The St Mark’s Primary School Drummoyne students will be in Canberra until December 6 as part of the swimming and diving teams at the Pacific School Games respectively.

The girls, who train with different clubs, will both pull on the NSW state representative colours at the Games.

Last week they both received Sportsperson of the Year awards from former Olympian Pat Scammell in the annual Primary Sports Awards which recognise outstanding young athletes from Catholic Primary schools who have excelled in a number of sports during the school year.

Bernadette, 12, was nominated for an award for her gold in the 50m medley breaststroke at the PSSA Swimming State championships at Sydney Aquatic Centre in April.

“She’s an outstanding athlete and participates in all sporting activities, showing talent in whatever she undertakes,” said Troy Moran, the Archdiocesan Primary Sports awards Co-ordinator.

“In 2008, she was elected school captain of her school and is an excellent role model for all who know her.”

Now in its eighth year, the students have to demonstrate a high level of sporting achievement in their schools, as well as represent a NSW Catholic Primary Schools (NSWCPS) MacKillop team or NSW Primary Schools Sports Association (NSWPSSA) State team, to win an award.

“This year we had well over 100 nominations, and from those only 30 students were selected for their great efforts,” Mr Moran said.

Louise, who won her award for competing at an elite level in gymnastics and diving, recently took third place at the NSW PSSA State diving championships.

At the school games she will compete in the 1m, 3m and synchronised events.

She said she dreamed of representing Australia at the Commonwealth and Olympic games.
“I feel really confident with good preparation,” she said.

“I’ve been training three days a week.”

Martin Shield exit for Gladesville

GLADESVILLE bowed out of the NSWJCU Martin Shield inter-district Open age cricket series after a second round loss to Manly-Warringah last Sunday.

Heavy overnight rain saw the turf pitch at picturesque Ryde Oval sodden and unsuitable for cricket - so the game was shifted to the synthetic pitch at Gannan Park.

Gladesville won the toss and elected to bat, hoping to put a decent total on the board against a more experienced Manly side and provide them with a tough run chase.

The slow outfield coupled with some extremely tight Manly bowling saw runs hard to come by and a slow trickle of wickets followed.

A steady partnership between Ranju Ratnam (21) and Alex Martin (16) and some late support from Andrew Kennedy (17 not out) saw Gladesville post a modest total of 77 off 50.4 overs.

Manly came out and despite losing a wicket in the second over to Luke Smith (1-23 off seven overs), pushed on and reached a winning total of 4-80 in the 28th over.

Mick Snowden toiled hard for Gladesville - finishing with 0-21 off nine overs while Mike Narayanan bowled an economic spell of inswingers to pick up 2-6 off five and all rounder Martin (1-26 off seven).

Gladesville has a bye in the final round.

Maloney records top sailing win

Express Boat Covers upstaged his more fancied competitors in winning the 16ft Skiff Handicap race last Saturday at Drummoyne.

Skippered by Frank Maloney in perfect wind conditions, Express Boat Covers never gave the opposition a chance with Brett Pollitt (Bentons Real Estate) finishing second and Delloitte Touche Tohmatsu in third spot.

It was Maloney’s first win of the season and in the process shaved three minutes off his handicap time.

The TS 16 Class resulted in an upset victory with Pelican, steered by John Horinek, winning in a fast time under handicap conditions.

Runner up Murphy’s Law - captained by Graham Bevan - recorded the fastest time and put a huge smile on crewman Dennis McDermott’s face. Dennis is a real competitor in this sport and a very popular Drummoyne Sailing Club employee. Third place went to Artic Tern.
