Key knocks by Moss & Arnold

IT was a case of mixed fortunes for Sydney Cricket Club over the Christmas-New Year period with trump cards Jon Moss and Russel Arnold again making an impact on the Sydney first grade scene.

Prolific run scorer Moss gave his team an ideal Christmas gift when he chalked up a century to pilot the Tigers to a limited overs victory over Blacktown at Ryde Oval on December 20.

The Tigers’ skipper compiled a stylish 102 in Sydney’s total of 6-245 with support from James Crosthwaite (55 not out), Tim Sparke (43) and NSW U/19 rep Justin Moore (31).

Former Sri Lankan international Arnold grabbed 4-35 from ten overs and Darren Ettridge (2-40) and Nathan Ball (2-48) as the Tigers’ dismissed Blacktown for 222 to claim the points.

And it was the experienced Arnold who rescued Sydney last Saturday in the local derby clash with Northern District at Drummoyne Oval - carving out a majestic 82 in the Tigers’ disappointing total of 184.

In reply, the Rangers were 3-90 at stumps and in a strong position to win the match and collect the Drummoyne Mayoral Trophy - thanks to a lion hearted bowling performance from quick Michael Hogan, who snared the impressive figures of 5-40 off 19 overs.

Sydney’s return to Drummoyne Oval for the first time this summer was shaping as a nightmare after a dramatic top order collapse had the Tigers reeling at 5-35 before Arnold and all rounder Nathan Ball (25) combined for an important sixth wicket stand of 99.

Arnold faced 116 balls and clouted one six and seven boundaries before he was caught by skipper Ben Davis off the bowling of David Ball (3-33 off 12 overs).

Tigers’ all rounder Darren Ettridge showed his value in the middle order with a fine knock of 27.

Ahillen Beadle (25 not out) and Ball (16 not out) will resume the batting for the Rangers this Saturday.

Meanwhile Sydney will bank on the likes of Moss (2-17 off eight), paceman Adam Maher (1-16 off five), swing merchant Nathan Ball, spinner Arnold and seamer Ettridge to grab early wickets and keep the home side in contention.

Record knock of 142 for Hopkins

DYNAMIC young Gladesville RSL Junior cricket all rounder Ian Hopkins (pictured) recently had officials searching through the record books after a scintillating performance in the Northern District Junior Cricket Association U/13 competition.

Playing against the undefeated St Patricks team, Ian demonstrated his skill and technique as an opening batsman by blazing a club record score of 142.

Hopkins, who smashed the bowling to all parts of the ground, hit 21 boundaries and faced 154 balls during his three hour stint at the crease as Gladesville posted a total of 5-243.

Not content with his batting exploits, the following week he opened the bowling in St Patrick’s innings and after five overs had ripped through their top order with a staggering four wickets for ten runs off 5 overs to set up a comfortable win.

Ian’s consistency as an all rounder also saw him achieve representative honours for Northern District this summer.

Progressive West Ryde Rovers Soccer look to the future

WEST Ryde Rovers have been officially confirmed in the 2009 Gladesville-Hornsby Football Association Super League competition.

This competition forms a bridge between the All Age Men’s First Division and Premier League.

Rovers’ strategic plan includes creating opportunities within the club to develop and retain players who want to play at more competitive levels.

Coaching Director Matt Hanchard is optimistic but cautious.

“This year we are concentrating on fielding Super League Firsts and Reserves squads who are committed and enthusiastic,” he said.

“Realistically we expect a tough season, but you wouldn’t want it any other way.”
