Tigers Back at Leichhardt HQ Tigers return to Leichhardt Oval HQ for just their second home game of the 2009 season this Friday night. They will be hosting their country cousins from the foot of the mountains the darling little Panther Pets. But fear not dear Tigers fans, they’ll show no mercy or favours on this occasion. Coz the Tigers know this is a must win return match with points needed on the comp ladder from here on in. We’ve given the other sides enough leeway and now it’s a call to action stations. At our first 2009 home game at HQ seven weeks ago we sent the Mexicans back south of the border winless with the Tigers in devastating form. This Friday will be a repeat performance. From this Friday on it will be all go! Tigers! go! As they climb the comp ladder towards grand final honours come Sunday October 4 at the olympic stadium. So now is the time to get set with the Ma-in-Law’s funeral fund on the Tigers with your favourite SP bookie for premiership glory. And it may even be a Tigers – Bunnies replay grand final as part of our Balmain Tigers 40 years celebrations of 1969. Tonight we’ll all be cheering for Tigers skipper Robbie Farah playing his first Blues State of Oblivion game in Mexico City over the Cane Toads. Then hopefully we’ll all be cheering him on back at HQ Friday night to lead the Tigers to victory. Then back to the Tigers Den to celebrate. See ya there.
Balmain Tigers hooker legend Bouncing Benny Elias with Ryde MP Victor Dominello wished Tigers 2009 hooker captain Robbie Farah good luck for tonight’s first 2009 State of Origin encounter in Melbourne pictured at this year’s Balmain Hall of Fame dinner at SCG. TWT on-the-spot PHOTO. Farah gripped by Origin fever By CHRIS KARAS STAR hooker Robbie Farah will follow in the footsteps of Balmain rugby league legend Benny Elias when he trots out for NSW in tonight’s State of Origin opener against Queensland at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium. Farah - one of seven NSW debutantes - is the first Tigers’ rake to don a Blues jumper since the classy Elias etched his name into Origin folklore with 19 appearances from 1985-94. Elias captained NSW to a series victory in 1990 and figured in other successful Origin campaigns - spearheading the Blues with his tricks-of-the-trade. Now the crafty Farah gets an opportunity to show his wares in the pressure-packed Origin arena when he lines up against the star-studded Maroons in the 2009 series opener. Farah is expected to back up two nights later and skipper the Wests Tigers in a crunch match against Penrith this Friday at Leichhardt Oval. The Tigers are desperate to pick up competition points after successive losses to the Bulldogs, South Sydney, Brisbane and New Zealand Warriors over the past month. At Mount Smart Stadium last Sunday, the Warriors continued their NRL hoodoo over the Tigers with a 14-0 victory in wet conditions. Rookie winger Kevin Locke nabbed two tries on debut as the Warriors’ posted a sixth win from seven matches against the injury-ravaged Tigers. Cool hand Darren inspires Tiger cubs RISING Wests Tigers rugby league half back Darren Nicholls showed nerves of steel in his team’s 24-all draw with New Zealand Warriors last Sunday at Mt Smart Stadium. The Tigers’ skipper turned in a mature performance across the Tasman with his pin-point kicking and organisational skills in a hard-fought Toyota Cup contest. Nicholls set up the Tigers’ final try with a neat chip kick that was regathered by five eighth Robert Lui who positioned winger Sama Sauvao to score with five minutes left on the clock. The 19 year old cub duly converted the try from wide out to level the scores and help the Tigers collect a valuable point. It was another stand out display from the talented Nicholls, who has caught the eye of senior Tigers’ officials with his leadership qualities and ability to spark the attack with a deft kick or pass. Rugged prop Andrew Fifita capped a big game for the U/20 cubs - carting the ball up strongly and crashing over for two tries to earn the Players’ Player award. Other cubs to impress were industrious lock Matt Hyland, who chalked up 50 tackles and ran the ball with zest; teenage forward tyro Aaron Woods and fullback Jake Mullaney. The Tigers remain entrenched in the top eight on 13 points and host a rejuvenated Penrith side this Friday afternoon at Leichhardt Oval. WESTS TIGERS 24 (A Fifita 2, J Mullaney, S Sauvao tries; J Mullaney 3, D Nicholls gls) drew with WARRIORS 24 (B Tupou 2, M Afioga, A Mara tries; S Johnson 4 gls). Tigers’ great Starling named Cougars patron CARLINGFORD Cougars Junior Rugby League Club have elected Balmain legend and former Test centre Geoff Starling as their club patron. A proud Starling is pictured displaying a 2009 Cougars jumper, flanked by the club’s Coaching co-ordinator Richard Kelly and Mini League trainer John Morgan. The Tigers’ great was formally welcomed to the Cougars as patron and presented with a club shirt during a recent Balmain Junior League round at Ryde Oval. Starling, who was inducted into the Tigers’ Hall of Fame in 2007, had a long association with the Cougars during the 1980s and early ‘90s when the club was known as St Gerards. He coached his sons Ben and Tim in the Mini and Mod Football junior ranks and a promising colt named Peter Wallace, who tonight will represent NSW in the State of Origin opener against Queensland in Melbourne. The Cougars have undergone a rebuilding program and now field nine teams from U/6s to U/13s. “We’ve taken on a more professional approach to coaching and have a new committee that show a strong passion for grass roots rugby league,” said Kelly. “The ladies auxiliary are a real asset to the club through their fund-raising efforts and tireless work behind the scenes.” Under the guidance of Kelly and Morgan, club president Warren Brooks, Tylana Booby, Melissa Kelly, Ross Mignacca, Steve Roddy and Ian Gibbeson the Cougars are a club going places. Exciting prospects to keep an eye on include Jack Harrison (U/10s); centre James Sullivan and Nathan Khalil (U/11s); Brant Booby (U/12s) and Matthew Brooks (U/13s).
Panthers edge out Glebe RYDE-Hunters Hill posted a spirited 2-1 victory over rivals Glebe last Saturday in a quality Sydney Mens Hockey Premier League first grade clash. After conceding an early goal, the Panthers created plenty of scoring oportunities and drew level 20 minutes after the interval with a drag flick from a penalty corner by Alex Jones. Solid defence from Jones and goalkeeper Michael Sneesby helped keep Glebe at bay, especially when Ryde was a man short for 15 minutes towards the end. Jones grabbed the winning goal after Shane Dalrymple had forced a penalty corner with 30 seconds left on the clock. Meanwhile Kirsten Pearce collected a double in Ryde’s 3-2 triumph over the Strikers. Jess Brown also scored as Ryde led 3-1 with five minutes remaining before goalie Zara was suspended for a foul and a penalty stroke awarded. The Strikers converted but were shut out by determined Ryde defence in the dying moments. ERNIE Elliott was recently crowned major singles champion of North Ryde RSL Mens Bowling Club after a 31-19 victory over Dave Baker in the final. The game was fairly even until about a quarter of the way through when Ernie’s skill came to the fore and he never looked in trouble. Minor singles title was won by Dave Nelson who defeated Ben Lau 31-10. Dave bolted out of the blocks and never gave Ben a chance. In the Graduation singles final John Grabiec rolled Ian Holden 31-21. This game was shot for shot and it was in the latter stages that John finally got on top. Pictured left to right Ern Elliott, Dave Baker, Dave Nelson, Ben Lau, Ian Holden and John Grabiec. Stellar season for Rydalmere cricketers By CHRIS KARAS RYDALMERE Cricket Club have experienced their most successful season in the Northern Disrict Cricket Association - capturing a premiership trifecta and third successive Club Championship trophy. It was a summer to savour for the Rydalmere club after clinching the first, third and fourth grade premiership titles and setting a new points record in the 2008-09 Club Championship. All seven senior Rydalmere teams advanced to the finals - an outstanding achievement - with the first grade X1 winning back to back titles and third in four seasons. The Club had a major injection of playing talent with a new partnership between Rydalmere and Dundas United CC. This partnership sees Rydalmere as the senior partner with ex Dundas senior players now playing under the Rydalmere banner and Rydalmere responsible for all senior cricket matters (player recruitment and retention) and giving Dundas junior players an improved pathway to playing senior cricket. The Dundas club, with help from Rydalmere, are responsible for junior player recruitment and retention, playing under the already well established Dundas United Junior CC - largely through the tireless work of stalwart Greg Berriman. This union has already beared fruit with Dundas United U/12s winning the premiership and Grand Final. Anyone wanting to play cricket in 2009/2010 can contact Matt Roberts 0412 863 869 (seniors) or Greg Berriman 0407 469 624. Rydalmere paid tribute to NDCA Treasurer John Prowse who after 20 years of sterling service has decided to call it a day. John’s contribution to the NDCA has been immeasurable and he worked tirelessly to better cricket in the local area. Matt Kennedy was the Association’s leading first grade wicket taker with 39 @ 9.82 while the Palmer brothers Scott and Ricky were the stand out players in third grade. Scott amassed 643 runs @ 128.60 and took 59 wickets @ 10.20 while Ricky scored 560 runs @ 32.94 and took 43 wickets @ 12.98. Toby Dunwell was the outstanding player in fourth grade - scoring 612 runs @ 34.0 and grabbing 54 wickets @ 12.13 for the Maroons while Adrian Jeyendra shone for the Sky Blues with 506 runs @ 50.60. GRAND FINALS: Firsts: Rydalmere 238 (Troy Kelly 60, Harpreet Singh 41, Cameron Rawding 39, Brent Rawding 37, Martin Rudelle-Greig 4-44, Andrew Thomas 3-29) d North Ryde RSL 93 (Andrew Harrison 44, Mal Little 3-12, Ryan Rawding 3-21, Matt Kennedy 3-32); Thirds: Rydalmere 283 (Brent Mattsson 66, Darren Falla 49, Matt Egan 5-54) drew with West Ryde Rovers 9-199 (M Egan 82, Mark Murray 5-54, Ricky Palmer 3-47) - Rydalmere premiers; Fourths: Rydalmere Maroon 159 (Toby Dunwell 33, Paul Vanderlight 28, Murali Arumuga 3-13, Shawn Pearl 3-76) & 1-93 (Shaylin Govender 52no, Ken Ong 27) d Epping YMCA 140 (S Pearl 30, T Dunwell 4-51, P Vanderlight 3-52) & 111 (S Pearl 51, James Poulos 5-23) outright.
Hillies clean sweep HUNTERS Hill first grade rugby team overcame atrocious conditions and last season’s premiers to record an emphatic 24-5 victory over Blacktown in NSW Suburban rugby action at Boronia Park Oval last weekend. Shrugging off a series of heartbreaking losses to Blacktown last season, the Black and Whites were superb in a very muddy bonus point win. After a slow start in which Blacktown forced the opening try, the Hunters worked their way into the game with Wellington product Sam Henry disregarding the slop underfoot in a series of long passing attacking forays. A try would eventually come to livewire winger Burzin Mehta - five points that evened the score and settled the home team before half-time. After the resumption the battle continued as Hunters Hill began to dominate territory on the back of the cultured boot of English scrum-half Stuart Woodbridge and the breakdown pressure of back-row Colman Taylor, Alex Light and Luke McLennan. That pressure would finally tell with boom centre Dan Casa laying on a try for imperious lock Dean Thomson to slide over under the posts. It was Thomson who would then seal the match for the home side with a superb run to put away flanker Luke McLennan. Not to be outdone, Thomson’s second row partner Jordan Butler slid over in the dying stages to clinch a bonus point win and a share of the championship lead. The first grade match capped a fantastic day for the Boronia Park-based club with all five grades chalking up wins over Blacktown. In second grade, Hunters Hill posted a 10-7 victory with Alex Vertoudakis’ performance applying even greater pressure on a group of selectors spoilt for back-row choice. Thirds remain undefeated after a 38-0 whitewash with Shannon Thomas producing an angry winger’s performance to stand-out in the mud. Scott Keenan produced a five star performance in fourths, offering tries to his outside men on a silver platter in a 38-0 win. It was the Hillies’ 23rd game without defeat. Fifths came from behind to register a 21-10 win. Hunters Hill enjoy a well deserved bye this weekend before lining up against traditional foes Petersham at Camperdown Oval on June 13. Fine start for rookie boxer A FORMER athletics champion who dominated middle distance sprinting for 15 years is carving out an impressive career in the boxing ring. Will Devjak of Eastwood enjoyed a successful career with Ryde Athletics Club before quitting athletics at the age of 26. He now trains as an amateur boxer at North Sydney Police Citizens Youth Club under the guidance of ex-Filipino champion Arnel Barotillo. Super fit Will, who attended St Patricks Dundas and Marist College Eastwood as a schoolboy, shows lots of natural ability and has won his only two fights as a welterweight to date. He enjoyed a top three national ranking in the Open 800 metre division and once ran a cracking 1 min 48.56 at a Telstra A Grand Prix meet in Melbourne. Will is now pouring his energies into boxing and completes ten training sessions a week under the watchful eye of Barotillo.
