Women to get their special committee

Clr Nicole Campbell said the committee would aim to establish a“sense of place” for local women.

Women of Ryde are about to get their own Council advisory committee after Clr Nicole Campbell put forward a notice of motion for one to be established and had it approved. At a recent Council meeting Clr Roy Maggio said he thought it was a great motion.

“I think we should endorse women having equal rights,” he said. Clr Sarkis Yedelian said he didn’t understand “this woman issue”. He said Australian women had more rights than women
in most countries.

“Don’t create another advisory committee,” he said. Clr Bill Pickering agreed that there were already enough committees on Council. He said he didn’t see a need for an advisory committee
for women.

“I don’t think we have a problem with the status of women in Ryde,” he said. Clr Campbell said the role of advisory committees was to support defined demographic groups - including women.

She said the committee would aim to establish a“sense of place” for local women, encourage participation, organise events, discuss issues and develop a networking hub.
