Year of the Tiger celebrations
February 14, 2010 will mark the beginning of the Lunar New Year calendar and somewhat fittingly in TWT Territory, the “Year of the Tiger”. The Lunar New Year is one of the biggest traditional festivities celebrated by the culturally diverse communities of Ryde. Although in many parts of Sydney, you will hear about “Chinese New Year” being celebrated, the Lunar New Year is in fact also celebrated by residents from Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese, Cambodian, and Malaysian backgrounds. Customs for Lunar New Year vary in different parts of the world but the underlying message is one of peace and happiness for family members and friends. For that reason, in Ryde we have intentionally named the upcoming festivities as the Ryde Lunar New Year Celebration to emphasise that everyone is welcome to join in the fun. The City of Ryde will officially be celebrating the Year of the Tiger between 14th and 20th February, with the main celebration day at Eastwood Plaza on Saturday 20th February 2010 from 11am to 5.30pm. All residents are invited to come and see the lions, dragons, Korean martial arts, fire crackers and other exciting performances on that day. The celebration is jointly organised by the City of Ryde, Eastwood Chinese Senior Citizens Club, Korean Chamber of Commerce, Eastwood Chamber of Commerce, Eastwood Rotary and Feng Hua Chinese School. Gold sponsors this year are Westpac Bank Eastwood, Eastwood Shopping Centre and
Lee Kum Kee. So what can we expect in the next 12 months during the Year of the Tiger? Tigers are physically powerful, gracious, independent and brave, and extremely bold animals. Apparently, the Year of the Tiger favours change, upheaval, movement, innovation, novelty, and initiative. So for those of you thinking of a career change, new business ventures, or moving houses etc, the Year of the Tiger may well be the right time to do all these things. I predict some positive changes on Ryde Council this year too. Perhaps we can also expect the One-Eyed Tiger’s footy tips to be even more accurate than usual in this auspicious year! |
