Epping ‘green’ group launched Transition Epping - the community action group for a relisient environmentally friendly future - had its first public meeting last week. Forty people heard about the origins of the worldwide movement and why the Epping group had ben formed. “The basic philosophy of transition towns is working at the local level to build resilience,” Transition Epping founder Sandra Nichols said. “The main guiding principles are caring for the earth and caring for people in equal measure and sharing any surplus. “It’s also getting off the global grid as much as possible in terms of energy, water and food supplies and networking with other like-minded organisations.’’ Transition Epping joins the growing number of transition towns in Sydney, such as Parramatta, Lane Cove and the Northern Beaches. The movement began four years ago in the UK and close to 1000 transition towns exist worldwide. Sourcing needs locally can mean growing and sharing produce, car pooling schemes, bulk buying solar panels and water tanks, reuse and repair workshops, creating local currencies and barter systems. The initial focus of Transition Epping will be a workshop series for North Epping residents involving an interactive, weekly three-hour session spread over eight weeks. The workshops start on Saturday March 27 at All Saints Anglican Church, Malton Road, North Epping. For more information phone Sandra Nichols on 9869 1351 or 0438 415 715; email envirodoc@ |
