Don’t cancel late Woolwich ferry

Dear Sir,

Sydney Ferries propose to cancel the 11.30 pm ferry from Circular Quay to Woolwich.

It is proposed that the last ferry will leave at 10.25 pm.

This is too early for theatre-goers and opera house patrons whose shows have not come out by this time.

I suggest Sydney Ferries advertise the 11.30 p.m. service in theatre and opera house programs.

Polling lesson to be learned

Dear Sir,

Interesting to see that Maxine McKew is not taking any of the blame for her defeat but blaming the Labor party.

She only has herself to blame for this loss, for consistently failing to meet with her constituents to listen to their point of view.

Even if the issues involved were more state than federal, I believe a federal member should listen to what is being said and at least attempt to try to alleviate the problems. After all, she promoted herself as ‘The Strong Voice of Bennelong’.

Not attending meetings with concerned residents, when invited to do so, was her downfall. She not only let the residents of this electorate down, but also let the Labor Party down.

She lost this crucial seat for the Labor Party all by herself - a lesson to be learned.

John Alexander, and anybody else contesting this seat in the future, should take note.

How to lose an election

Dear sir,

How not to win an election - don’t let the voters know you are a candidate.

I live in a large retirement village in Hunters Hill which is part of the North Sydney electorate. We had pre-polling and I expected to see the candidates or, at least some of their supporters, in attendance handing out ‘How to vote’ information. However this was not the case.

In fact, throughout the campaign the only person who provided information was Joe Hockey, the sitting member, and if he had not supplied ‘How to vote’ cards I would not have known that other candidates were standing.

(Local papers were concentrating on Bennelong, the electorate Hunters Hill used to be in.)

If this was indicative of the interest - or lack of - shown by the other candidates I wonder how active they would have been on behalf of their constituents if they had been elected.

Only research is true science

Dear Sir,

In recent days Independents Rob Oakeshott and Nick Xenophon have said Australia should reduce CO2 emissions because of the scientific consensus.

They may not know this but “scientific consensus” is not science - only “scientific research” is science.

Three scientists Ferenc Miskolczi, Richard Lindzen and Roy Spencer have different peer reviewed papers demonstrating Greenhouse gases cannot and will not overheat the planet.

Their work is verifiable and there is no counter science to their work. It stands tall and strong in the literature.

I want to ask all MPs: Will you attempt to reform parliamentary debate to make sure there is scientific research (rather than scientific consensus) that underpins legislation?

This is symbolic of our future: Will we build our future on “scientific rock” or “consensus sand”?

Former leader has got it right

Dear Sir,

Former State Liberal leader Peter Debnam is spot on in his advice to Barry O’Farrell not to play small-target politics.

This is where you do not declare your own policies, just let State Labor die on the vine as it surely will. Do not make yourself a target is the idea.

We need to know before the elections what the Liberals are standing for. Otherwise if elected, you will be open to criticism of not putting policies before the people of NSW.

The suspicion will be that you will not carry through the reforms we suspect you may be promising. Or are you?

Lack of justice

Dear Sir,

Who will be held responsible for the deaths of four young people who were burnt to death in the “bats in the ceiling” fiasco caused by greed and irregular behaviour.

Where is the justice?

Boer War links?

Dear Sir,

The Boer War Memorial Committee is looking for descendants of that war.

We are searching for descendants of soldiers or nurses who served with the Australian, New Zealand, Canadian, South African, or British troops in South Africa 1899 to 1902 .

A national memorial in Canberra is planned. Contact me on (02) 9427 3781 or, paul.lenehan@bwm.org.au
