Raising the Barre at Stepaside Studios

In it’s seventh year of business, Stepaside Studios are set to open their doors in 2016 with more excitement and opportunity than ever before.

Local schoolboy Callan MacKenzie, who attends classes at Stepaside, was thrilled with the news of receiving Stepaside’s Dancer of the Year Scholarship in 2015.

“Winning the scholarship gave me the opportunity to work with international choreographer Artem Tkachuk for six weeks training in Russian ballet style” says Callan.

“It was such a great experience learning from someone who trained at the Odessa Classical Ballet School in Kiev, Ukraine. It was really just amazing!”

Studio Director Bianca Sulkowicz is grateful to share moments like these with her students to enhance and develop each and every student’s dance training.

“Our pro-advanced students got to work with guest choreographer Kate Ridge.”

Kate brought a wealth of experience to her lessons at Stepaside, holding a Masters in Global and Cultural Education, she was also a professional dancer at Disneyland Resort and Knott’s Berry Farm, Anaheim and she toured extensively with Dance America and Dance Olympus Conventions.

“Our students were very inspired to learn from Kate,” says Bianca.

2016 sees Stepaside Studios raise the bar once again by teaming up some new collaborations with choreographers from New Zealand, Canada and again the United States.

This year, Stepaside will be launching a new affiliation with Californian based association Acrobatic Arts where students will be able to learn syllabus driven skills in acrobatics and tumbling.

“One of our tasks as educators is to respond to demand and ensure our students are exposed to the most up-to-date curriculums in dance,” says Bianca.

Stepaside holds true to its vision, always providing the best of dance education in the local area.

“It really is the brilliant faculty of qualified teachers that allows our school to provide such diverse learning opportunities and experiences for our students.”

2015’s Most Outstanding Junior student Monique Edwards says: “One of my highlights last year was definitely cheerleading front of thousands of people at the Roosters v Warriors NRL football match,” says Monique

“We were really nervous before going out onto the field to perform, but as soon as we finished, we all wanted to do it again. I loved every minute and can’t wait to do it again this year!”

With the ever-growing popularity of their Tiny Tots classes, Stepaside will also be launching a newly developed pre-schooler program including lessons catered to students as young as 2 years old.

ED5International graduate Miss Sally Dangar will be leading the Wednesday morning programs, which introduces Tiny Tappers, Mums and Bubs classes and Twinkle Toes themed programs for the active toddler.

With a new and improved fit-out taking place at their studio, the team at Stepaside Studios are ready to sore into the year ahead. Stepaside Studios are located on the corner of Chatham and Victoria Road, West Ryde (entrance via 2 Graf Avenue) and are currently taking new enrolments.

KLD Dance Scholarship for gifted Sienna, 11

Talented 11 year old Sienna Pantalone is a deserved recipient of the KLD Performing Arts Dance Scholarship valued at approximately $2,000.

She is pictured with her teacher Miss Kate Mico after winning the scholarship at her 2015 Annual Performance last December.

Students eligible for this award must have demonstrated a strong commitment to dance and the KLD community and must show ability to balance their creativity, initiative and technique through performance as well as demonstrate their desire to pursue individual goals.

The gifted Sienna received a perfect score of 100 per cent in her Grade Three Ballet examination with British Ballet Organization (BBO) 2015.

These examinations are assessed by an independent BBO assessor and are highly technical. Outstanding results meant that Sienna and five other KLD students – were invited to participate in elite BBO Associates program in 2016.

“For anyone who knows Sienna, they would agree with me in saying that she is a very beautiful, intelligent and kind hearted girl,” says teacher Kate.

“Last year Sienna received 99.3% in her Grade Three Examination. She set herself a goal to improve on her personal best, and was very dedicated and worked extremely hard to do so,” said Kate.

“What I admire about Sienna, is although she is dedicated she still took the time to stop and help others.

“Sienna is a truly wonderful student, and it’s no wonder her peers elected her to be dance captain of their showcase team. I am one extremely proud teacher. Remember this girl’s name – I’m sure you will be hearing it again in the future” Kate predicted.
