The choice of January 26 is, clearly, divisive, whereas a National Day should unite us.
Of course, changing the date does not solve any problems for those who can’t afford electricity, and in particular it does not solve the numerous problems of indigenous Australians.
But it is a symbolic gesture and symbols ARE important – otherwise we wouldn’t be discussing this topic at all.
As for alternative dates, I understand Federation Day has been proposed, but there could be difficulties with that.
Maybe, then, a purely symbolic date with no historical significance. For example, the first day of Spring.
Or the day after the winter solstice, when days start getting longer and spring is just round the corner.
