RYDE Hunters Hill Panthers have just missed out on bringing home silverware from the women’s TigerTurf Cup pre-season hockey tournament held in Brisbane last weekend.

Brisbane team Valley defeated Ryde 3-1 in the Plate Final of the annual nine-a-side tournament last Sunday.

Ryde started the tournament with a 2-1 loss to University of Queensland, before rebounding by beating Brisbane team Norths Eagles 1-0.

The Panthers then won its last pool match against Valley, Brisbane Division 1 champions from 2013 to 2015, by a score of 1-0 to qualify for the quarter-finals.

Ryde were outclassed 3-1 by Gold Coast side Burleigh in the quarter-final clash, relegating the Sydney team to the consolation Plate competition.

They again faced Norths Eagles in the Plate semi-final, and again the result was a 1-0 win to Ryde.

The Panthers then fell to Valley, featuring three current and former Australian Hockeyroos players, in the Plate Final.

Brisbane team Kedron-Wavell won the TigerTurf Cup, which featured 12 teams from Brisbane, Sydney, Gold Coast and Toowoomba.

Olympians Angie Lambert, Gabi Nance and Jade Close and fellow Australian Hockeyroos Madison Fitzpatrick, Renee Taylor, Jordyn Holzberger, Ashlea Fey and Savannah Fitzpatrick competed at the two-day tournament.

Ryde’s men side travel north to Brisbane this weekend to defend its TigerTurf Cup crown won last summer.

The Panthers are in the same pool as reigning Brisbane Hockey League champions Bulimba Bulls, Gold Coast team Labrador Tigerstix and an Ipswich representative selection.
