New General Managers have been appointed at City of Ryde and Canada Bay Councils. GEORGE DEDES is the City of Ryde new General Manager and PETER GAINSFORD is the new GM at Canada Bay.

GEORGE DEDES, pictured left, has served as Acting General Manager for several months and was unanimously appointed by councillors last Tuesday during a confidential session of council.

Ryde Mayor Clr Jerome Laxale says Mr Dedes is “the perfect fit” and will start immediately.

He is one of five people to have served in the job in the last eight years.

“His appointment will bring about stability to the City of Ryde which has had three different General Managers in the space of two years since the drawn out council mergers issue began,” the Mayor said.

“Promoting internally will also ensure continuity for Council and its operations.

“During his time as Acting General Manager Mr Dedes has demonstrated that he is the perfect fit to lead the operations of the City of Ryde and oversee key projects that are planned for 2018 and beyond.

“In addition, Mr Dedes’ leadership, communication and service delivery skills have strengthened the commercial focus of Council, improving service delivery for the Ryde community in an environment of continuous change.”

Mr Dedes has more than 25 years of experience in senior public service at both local and state government levels. He has worked with the City of Ryde since 1999 and is highly regarded as an engineer.

Meanwhile, City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas announced Peter Gainsford as General Manager, replacing Gary Sawyer, who has retired after 11 years as the City of Canada Bay Council’s GM and over 40 years’ service in the public sector.

Mr Gainsford, who assumed the GM role on January 29, was previously Deputy General Manager – Assets and Environment at Inner West Council.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for Peter,” Mayor Tsirekas said.

“He takes over the leadership of Council in a strong position but following a time of change and uncertainty.

“I am sure the staff will join me to make him welcome as we move into a period of stability where we can build on delivering great services for our community. The other Councillors and I are looking forward to working with Peter.”

Mr Gainsford has an MBA and a Degree in Civil Engineering. He started at Leichhardt Council as an apprentice in March 1983 and rose through the ranks in Corporate Services and Asset Management to become Director of Infrastructure and Service Delivery in 2002.

He is committed to long term financial sustainability, excellence in customer service, and the delivery of quality services for the community.
