Local Democracy is The Winner!
Local Democracy is the true winner from last Saturday’s Local Government elections held in TWT Territory.
Elections had been delayed for twelve months in a number of Council areas pending court cases against the Berejiklian coalition government’s forced mergers attempts.
The Berejiklian government has paid the price with massive protest votes changing the faces of Ryde, Hunters Hill and Lane Cove Councils in particular with Liberal party representation halved in both Ryde and Lane Cove and losses of mayoralty in both.
In Hunters Hill the Liberal Party for the first time contested endorsed party candidates with retiring Councillor Zac Miles competing for mayor against Deputy Mayor Clr Mark Bennett and former mayor Ross Williams.
In Canada Bay Angelo Tsirekas did a Lazarus and came back to claim the mayoral chain and robes while Ryde and Lane Cove will have to wait until the polls are declared and their first Council meetings called.
Pre-poll voters were faced with a barrage of campaigners and billboards for candidates when they attended the Ryde Council pre-poll voting place at the former Ryde City Bowling Club in Ryde Park. TWT on-the-spot PHOTO.
