PC brigade protest season

AUSTRALIA DAY seems to increasingly bring out the would-be PC brigade protesting January 26 as our national celebration day. Previously known as Anniversary Day commemorating the birth of our modern multicultural nation, the dissidents believe Australia Day ignores our earlier or original inhabitants. This week we invite you to have your say and give us your opinion.

Neita heads honours list

NEITA MATTHEWS OAM heads this Week’s Birthday Honours List facing 84 candles on her birthday cake on Sunday with greetings from her three sons Peter, Greg and Ian who is currently resident in USA.

Neita was Ryde Citizen of the Year 2008 and shares the distinction with Greg OBE of being the only mother and son who have been elected to their respective Sports Hall of Fame, Greg naturally for cricket and Neita equally for Netball as Patron of Netball NSW.

Saturday, January 21 is also special in the Booth family as the 61st wedding anniversary of JB’s elder twin brother Dr Peter Arthur Booth and Margaret Quain Nicholson Barnier who were wed at Eastwood’s St Phillip’s Church and have resided ever since following their honeymoon trip in Pommieland and with three beautiful daughters Debbie, Bregitta and Amber and families.

Although Debbie with her hubby Graham and daughters Eva and Zoe saw the light and now live in Oz up  Canberra way.

Peter and Ely Menton now of Bankstown also celebrate their wedding anniversary Sunday, their 40th, thanks to, or in spite of, JB introducing them and being Godfather of their wedding in Manila The Philippines and later Godfather of their children Rosalina Mary (Rosemary Superstar) and David John.

Rosemary is currently an English teacher in Shanghai China and she has shouted her parents a lovers weekend at the fabulous Hydro Majestic Hotel, Medlow Bath in the Blue Mountains.

Hydro Majestic Hotel holds special memories for JB too coz when first elected to Ryde Council in 1959 and elected chairman of the Town Planning Committee I decided we would go to the Hydro for a week to prepare the original Town Plan which included revolutionary planning a new university on what was then Green Belt land at North Ryde.

Hence today we have a thriving Macquarie University and Macquarie Park Industrial Park thanks to the co-operation of my three fellow committee members. And despite the efforts of successive Councils to dismantle the plan. Especially mayor Bill Harrison.

Saturday January 21 is also 31st wedding anniversary of Peter and Helen Sullivan and would’ve been 72nd wedding anniversary of former Epping RSL Club president Charles Brown OAM and Elizabeth Brown.

Remember where you heard it first! Today is 66th wedding anniversary of Anne and Joe Bolton of Ryde who were the longtime funeral directors of TJ Andrews Ryde and were always the last one to let you down!

They have been lifetime supporters of Balmain Tigers along with their children and they toured with the One-Eyed Tigers Tigeroos Tour to Pommieland and Europe led by JB all those years ago when the Tigers made up nearly half the Kangaroos team.

Victoria Kilby celebrates tomorrow same day as Hanne Brock Roslind who is mourning the recent passing of her soulmate Roar Roslind in Roskilde Denmark.

Siegi Haas, father of Lukas Haas who is currently visiting Oz ten years after spending six month with us to improve his English, is celebrating in Vienna with better half Ruth and daughter Judith who also spent six months attending Ryde Secondary College some years ago.

Amelia Hull turns 48 on Friday same day as Christina Bandzivlis while Rebecca Maxted of Beecroft turns 23 elder daughter of JB niece Gina and Ian Maxted and grandaughter of Eva Maxted of North Ryde and sister of Michael and Hayley.

Julia Hunt Wallace celebrates her special day in Pommieland with hubby Wallace also on Friday as does Debbie Price of Ryde.

Faye Dunn better half of Noel Dunn of Ryde Rotary fame celebrates Monday same day as Pearl Pedrosa in Manila The Philippines who is the mother of JB Godson Rye Rye Pedrosa (one of JB’s 32 Godchildren).

Olive Jardine of North Ryde is one of our favourites who on Tuesday will notch up 97 years pre-dating The Weekly Times by eight months and comprises the female half of our famous World War 2 service couple with hubby Gordon Jardine who served in the Army in Darwin during the Japanese air raids and Olive served in the WRAAF.  Both are longtime members of North Ryde RSL.

Balmain Tigers favourite son Robbie Farah turns 34 on Tuesday same day Thomas Leigh son of Andy and stepson of JB niece Bregitta Booth Leigh turns 28 in London.

Hunters Hill Mayor Emeritus Sue Hoopmann OAM celebrates next Wednesday same day as John Brown of Ryde and Geoff and Janice Brennan of Ryde celebrate 42 years wedded bliss. Happy daze all.
