Principal theatre role for Ryde girl Gabrielle

RYDE resident Gabrielle Chan (pictured) has landed a prestigious role in The Sydney Theatre Company’s production of Chimerica.

Gabrielle who is fluent in Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese and English emigrated to Australia in 1982 from Vietnam via Hong Kong.

Over the years she has appeared in classic Chinese opera, short films, TV series, theatre and television commercials but admits that being cast in the Australian premiere of Chimerica is a dream come true.

“I’m thrilled at the opportunity”, she said.

“I play two different roles in the play so it’s quite challenging but rehearsals are going well with the ensemble cast and I can’t wait for opening night”.

Chimerica was written by Lucy Kirkwood and is directed by Kip Williams (All My Sons) and opens at The Roslyn Packer Theatre in Walsh Bay on February 18.

The production was inspired by events in Tiananmen Square and tracks two decades of US-China relations through personal narratives of those at the margins of history.
