It’s a riot for women

-

JOIN THE Parramatta Female Factory Friends when they commemorate the Factory Riot of 1827 this Saturday.

On October 27, 199 years ago, the convict women, fed up with appalling living and working conditions and a cut in rations, broke out of the Factory and Penitentiary, onto the streets of Parramatta like ‘Amazonian Banditti’, alarming all before them.

Commemorations begin with the Research Centre open for inquiries, book sales, bric a brac and memorabilia, the Annual Thomas Keneally Lecture (bookings essential) at 10am, while a lone piper plays and floral tributes are laid in homage to the women at the Bicentenary Commemorative Wall (c1818-2018) from 11.30am.

At 1pm, visitors can join a tour accessing one of the 200-year-old female convict era buildings and be moved by the stories of these ordinary yet quite extraordinary women including their survival, resilience and legacy.

It’s on Saturday, October 24, 9.30am-3pm, at the Parramatta Female Factory & Institutions Precinct, 5 Fleet Street, North Parramatta.
