LABOR’S LATEST federal budget has further increased the tax on tobacco which defeats its supposed purpose of reducing consumption of cigarettes and tobacco products and increased the criminal activity of black market sales.
One Nation Leader Senator Pauline Hanson has said if elected at the next federal election she will cut the tobacco tax by 75 percent immediately in a move to reduce serious black market crime.
And she has been supported by no less than NSW Labor Premier Chris Minns who claims he has been promoting that policy for a year without success from his federal Labor comrades.
He said that instead of reducing smoking the tax made smokers turn to black market cigarettes in larger numbers and boosting the criminal element.
However the Cancer Council Australia opposes any reduction of the tax and claims the policy over 25 years has reduced the number of smokers in Australia.
